El Monte Union High School Teachers, Students Receive $10,000 Donation

Mountain View High School received a donation of $10,000 from RHP Properties through a partnership with the national non-profit organization, AdoptAClassroom.org. The donation will provide students with tools and materials to help them learn and succeed in school. The funds will be divided equally among Mountain View High teachers, who can register and order the supplies they need through AdoptAClassroom.org.

Baldwin Park Unified Robotics Teams Qualify for World Championship

Baldwin Park Unified BP STEM Academy robotics teams continued to excel, with two teams qualifying for the VEX World Championships, to be held in Texas from May 3 to May 12. Team Something Ain’t Right won the State Championship on March 13, which secured the team’s spot at the World Championship, while Team Hold Up received a formal invitation to the World Championship based on its overall performance for the 2021-22 school year. The two teams will join Team Wait a Minute to compete at the U.S. Open for Robotics, to be held in Iowa from March 31 to April 2.

Lynwood Unified Finalizes New Strategic Planning Process

Lynwood Unified is fostering student and community success through its Strategic Planning Process, a collaborative project that aims to address the needs of the District community and students over the next five years. The Strategic Planning Committee will hold a series of meetings covering topics, such as global and local education trends, that will help the district align its goals and develop a strong vision for the future, receiving input from students, teachers, staff, families, and community partners.

Whittier Union Adult School ESL Students Organize Relief Drive

Whittier Union Adult School ESL students have responded to the humanitarian crisis in Europe by organizing a Ukrainian Relief drive, collecting socks, clothes, blankets, toys, personal hygiene items, baby items, disposable tableware and non-perishable food to assist the millions of refugees displaced from their homes. The donation drive has set in motion a passionate response among the adult school students, who have thus far amassed enough supplies to fill five truckloads. In addition to adult school students, donations have come from Frontier and Sierra Vista high school students, as well as District office employees who share the United Sierra Education Center complex.

Baldwin Park Unified Senior Receives Scholarship on News Show

Baldwin Park High School senior Yanyi He received the surprise of her life when she was awarded a $40,000 scholarship to use toward her post-secondary education during a live appearance on Good Morning America (GMA). Yanyi was told she was being interviewed for a GMA segment on students and the pandemic; instead, Yanyi was awarded a scholarship alongside 25 other seniors from across the nation. GMA teamed up with the College Board’s BigFuture program to provide $1 million in scholarships to Class of 2022 seniors.

Covina-Valley Unified to Host Inaugural Career and Job Fair

Covina-Valley Unified School District will host its inaugural Career and Job Fair from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. Students of all ages and their families are invited to attend the event, where they will meet representatives from trade schools, businesses, adult education schools, community colleges and local labor unions, and gain insight on career opportunities and planning. The event will be held at Covina District Field, located at 200 W. Puente St., Covina.

Río Hondo College Welcomes Secretary of Education, Congresswoman to Campus to Hear Student Stories

Río Hondo College students had the opportunity to talk face-to-face with U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and Congresswoman Linda Sánchez on March 29, relaying their own personal stories about housing and food security and discussing what elected officials can do to provide further assistance. Cardona and Sánchez met with six current and former Río Hondo College students, Superintendent/President Teresa Dreyfuss and the College’s Board of Trustees, then went into a roundtable discussion with Dreyfuss and the students, discussing topics such as the Hope Scholars Program, transportation, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fontana Unified Special Education Teachers Recognized by State Senator Connie Leyva for Excellence

Almeria Middle School special education teachers Michelle Goodrow and Kitzia Jackson were honored with a Certificate of Recognition by State Sen. Connie Leyva for their dedication and hard work helping students with moderate or severe disabilities develop the skills they need to lead healthy, independent lives, during a ceremony held March 13 in front of family, friends and special education students. Goodrow and Jackson also received Excellence in Education certificates from Almeria Principal Felix Jones.

Whittier Union Adult School Graduate Lands Position at District

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Renan Mota da Silva enrolled in Whittier Union Adult School’s English as a Second Language (ESL) online program, hoping to improve his language skills. A former special education teacher in Brazil, Mota de Silva longed to become a credentialed teacher in the U.S. Today, Mota de Silva is employed as an Instructional Vocational Specialist in the Transition Program at Whittier Union. His new position allows him to apply his experience as a special education teacher in Brazil and help Whittier Union transition students prepare for careers, find potential job sites, and learn to live independently.

Baldwin Park Unified Students to Showcase Art, Musical Talents

Baldwin Park High School students will deliver a special music performance for the local community at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 25 at the City of Baldwin Park’s Arts and Recreation Center (ARC). The Visual and Performing Arts program performance will feature the talents of the Braves’ band, orchestra and choir, and follows the grand opening of the City’s “Canvases, etc.” art exhibit, which features mixed media artwork from Baldwin Park High students. The grand opening begins at 4 p.m. The exhibit runs through Saturday, April 9. The ARC is located at 14403 E. Pacific Ave., Baldwin Park.
