C-VUSD Energy Conservation Program Earns EPA ENERGY STAR Honors
Covina-Valley Unified School District has been honored with ENERGY STAR certifications from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its dedication to sustainable and fiscally responsible practices through its comprehensive energy conservation program. Twelve District buildings, including 10 school sites, earned ENERGY STAR certifications for meeting ventilation standards set by the EPA and rating in the top 25 percent nationwide for energy efficiency.
LUSD Admins Accepted into Google Education Innovation Fellowship
Lynwood Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite and Assistant Superintendent of Technology and Innovation Dr. Patrick Gittisriboongul have been accepted into the inaugural 2023-24 Google GSV Education Innovation Fellowship, an achievement that recognizes their steadfast leadership and dedication toward being among the nation’s most innovative and forward-thinking leaders in K-12 education. The Google GSV Education Innovation Fellowship is designed to empower 25 top-level instructional district leaders who are committed to leveraging technology to transform education and drive rigorous outcomes for student achievement within their school districts.
Covina-Valley Unified Prepares for First Day of 2023-24 School Year
Covina-Valley Unified School District will start its new school year on Monday, Aug. 21. The District serves the communities of Covina, West Covina, Glendora, San Dimas, and Irwindale with 19 school sites, including an early childhood center and two adult education campuses.
Baldwin Park Unified Community to Join in Hub City Nature Walk
Baldwin Park Unified families will enjoy a one-mile nature walk and explore the Walnut Creek Nature Park at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 28. The Hub City Wellness and Nature Walk is hosted in collaboration with the City of Baldwin Park, Kaiser Permanente and Baldwin Park Unified. Participants will begin the walk at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, located at 1011 Baldwin Park Blvd.
Río Hondo College Presents William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’
Río Hondo College’s Performing Arts Department presents an evening of Shakespeare on the Lawn with performances of “The Tempest,” directed by Annelise Euler and William Korf, at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 21; Saturday, July 22; Sunday, July 23; Tuesday, July 25 and Wednesday, July 26. The events will take place at the College’s lower quad lawn area and is free to the public. Río Hondo College is located at 3600 Workman Mill Rd., Whittier.
Fontana Unified School District will welcome new administrators at the District and school levels – many of whom are current employees embracing new leadership roles – during the 2023-24 school year, signaling alignment with the priorities Superintendent Miki R. Inbody heard during her Reconnecting Campaign. The introduction of 15 new administrators follows Inbody’s first 100 days as superintendent, during which she met with employees, students, the Board of Education and the community to listen and learn about the needs of students. Inbody then took action, supported by the Board, to ensure the District is staffed with strong leaders in the right positions to best serve Fontana Unified students and guide the upward trajectory of success in the District.
Both new and familiar faces will step into leadership positions throughout Bonita Unified School District ahead of the 2023-24 school year, bringing years of experience and dedication to supporting academic excellence and fostering equity in education. Sean Casey will lead Chaparral-Vista High School as their principal, Nikole Burgess will serve as an assistant principal at Bonita High School, Kendra Lewis will join Chaparral-Vista High School as its new dean of student services and Dr. Kim Lawe will join the District as the new Senior Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction.
Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Larry Cecil has retired from the El Monte Union High School District, concluding a career of more than 36 years dedicated to fostering educational excellence and student success. Surrounded by family and long-time colleagues in the District, Cecil was celebrated and adorned with memorabilia representing his extraordinary career, kind words that highlighted his character and work ethic, and gifts to enjoy throughout his retirement during a reception on June 15.
Baldwin Park Unified Students Explore Through Expanded Learning
Baldwin Park Unified Think Together students spent their summer touring SoFi Stadium, where they ran football drills, enjoyed field days complete with games and sports, and explored the Natural History Museum as part of the District’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P). ELO-P provides funding for after-school and summer enrichment activities and incorporates community partnerships to provide student-centered opportunities that complement the curriculum taught during the school day. ELO-P is a six-week program that runs Monday to Friday and includes academic enrichment in English language arts and mathematics.
Bonita Unified School District has been recognized by the California Early Childhood Special Education (CalECSE) Network for its BLAST Preschool Program, which provides a comprehensive early education experience for children ages three to five. The CalECSE Network, a project funded by the California Department of Education, supports school districts, special education local plan areas (SELPAs), county offices of special education and other agency partners in addressing and eliminating barriers for California’s youngest children with disabilities throughout the state. BLAST, which stands for "Building Lifelong Academic Skills Together," serves both children who are typical learners and children with special needs. The program, offered at Grace Miller and Shull elementary schools, provides a research-based curriculum taught by an early childhood special education teacher with the support of two instructional aides.
