Top Scholars Recognized at Board of Trustees Meeting

Lynwood, Calif. – Lynwood Unified seniors will soon reach the important milestone of receiving their high school diplomas and beginning a new chapter in their journeys into career and higher education during commencement ceremonies taking place next week.

Students from Firebaugh, Lynwood and Vista high schools will celebrate the culmination of their primary and secondary school careers during graduation ceremonies, which will take place as follows:

  • Lynwood High School – Wednesday, June 11 at 6 p.m. at LHS, 4050 E. Imperial Hwy, Lynwood
  • Vista High School – Thursday, June 12 at 1 p.m. at Bateman Hall, 11331 Ernestine Ave., Lynwood
  • Firebaugh High School – Thursday, June 12 at 6 p.m. at LHS, 4050 E. Imperial Hwy, Lynwood

Hundreds of Lynwood and Firebaugh high school students will walk across the stage to receive credentials they have been working years to achieve, including each schools’ Top 10 students, who were recognized at the June 3 Board of Trustees meeting.

At Lynwood High, the Top 10 are going to universities such as UCLA, UC Irvine and UC Berkeley. They include: Juan Delgadillo (4.79 GPA); Kevin Fregoso (4.74 GPA); Rosa Penaloza (4.71 GPA); Yazmin Rosas (4.7 GPA); Yesica Castaneda (4.61 GPA); Viviana Najera (4.58 GPA); Cruz Perez (4.56 GPA); Evelyn Juarez (4.55 GPA); Andrew Jimenez (4.54 GPA); Jessica Lujan (4.5 GPA); and Sulma Rodriguez (4.5 GPA).

At Firebaugh High, the Top 10 students will attend universities such as USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Davis, Columbia University, University of La Verne and UC Merced. They are: Melody Esqueda (4.47 GPA); Araceli Negrete (4.43 GPA); Adamaris Medina (4.42 GPA); Liliana Magana (4.41 GPA); Juan Contreras (4.38 GPA); Karina Robles (4.37 GPA); Gregory Gallegos (4.36 GPA); Marlene Guerrero (4.35 GPA); Sandra Rodriguez (4.33 GPA); and Melissa Vargas (4.32 GPA).

Together with the Pathway Independent Study Program, Vista High School will hold its promotional ceremony for 160 students. The valedictorian will be Crystal Partida, and the student speakers will be Andrea Diaz and Luis Ochoa.

Lynwood Unified’s two comprehensive high schools are graduating more students than ever, with each boasting significant double-digit graduation rate increases since the 2010-11 school year. Since then, the number of graduating seniors at Firebaugh High has skyrocketed nearly 20 percent, with 89.1 percent ofseniors graduating in 2012-13. Similarly, Lynwood High has also seen a significant increase, with 80.9 percent of seniors graduating in 2012-13.
