WHAT: Thirty students from the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier will attend a four-day pilot program where they’ll take hip-hop dance lessons, learn about statistics and math through gaming and tour the police academy gun range.

WHEN: 12:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, June 20 to Thursday, June 23

WHERE: Rio Hondo College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier

DETAILS:
This pilot program will introduce middle and high school students to college to instill the value that attending college is attainable, interesting and a positive experience.

Students will be introduced to Rio Hondo’s sciences and health programs, public safety careers, theater and digital media. They also will have time for fun with chemistry, a soccer clinic, basketball skills and free swim at the campus pool.

These workshops are the brainchild of Rio Hondo Board of Trustees President Mary Anne Pacheco, who also serves on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, and club Director Oscar Hernandez.

College officials are exploring grant options that would allow the program to expand to multiple sessions next summer.
