WHAT: Baldwin Park Unified will honor outgoing Board of Education member Blanca Estela Rubio, who was elected in November to the California Assembly. Rubio’s reception will precede the Board of Education’s annual organization meeting, at which the board will select its 2017 officers. Rubio, a classroom teacher, was elected to the school board in 2003, and re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

DETAILS: Rubio served as a board president and vice president during her tenure, which included the 2006 voter approval of Measure K, a $75.5 million bond measure for school repairs and upgrades, construction of a three-story building a Sierra Vista High School, two state-of-the-art football stadiums and two state-of-the-art auto centers.

The District also received numerous honors, including six Golden Bell Awards from the California School Boards Association, 14 California Gold Ribbons and recognition by Education Trust-West as the California’s No. 1 District in closing the achievement gap among students of color in 2013. This year, the District received the prestigious Multiple Pathways to Biliteracy Award from Californians Together, a coalition of 25 parent, professional and civil rights groups that advocates for equal access to quality education.
