LA PUENTE, CA – Bassett High senior Arianna Flores celebrated with her peers and family at the school’s annual Senior Scholarship Breakfast, where she was awarded $750 in community scholarships – an achievement she credits to the District’s support.

“Bassett Unified helps low-income students, and I don’t think I would have gotten this much support if I had stayed with another district,” Flores said. “The District has helped not only me, but my siblings as well – they will have more opportunities than I had and I think that’s great.”

Flores was one of 70 Bassett High seniors awarded community scholarships worth more than $49,000 on May 21.

More than 50 seniors will attend four-year universities or colleges across the country, or serve in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Air Force. Flores will attend UC Santa Barbara and major in political science. Her goal is to advocate for school districts regarding issues on preserving school funding and generating revenue for programs boosting student success.

“I’m in Advanced Placement classes, and I’m surrounded by people who are driven by the same goals so we don’t get off track,” Flores said. “For other students, they may not have that same drive or purpose. I want to help those students.”

Awards included scholarships from Kaiser Permanente, THINK Together and National Honor Society.

“Thank you to all of our community and school organizations that contributed toward the success of our students in achieving their higher education goals,” Interim Superintendent Debra French said. “Congratulations to the Class of 2017, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”
