WHITTIER – Pioneer High School senior Jesus Barradas has a strong bond with his family, a loving connection that has enabled him to move forward confidently with his education and become a campus leader who personifies academic excellence, perseverance, and character.

Barradas, who boasts a 4.25 GPA, has consistently challenged himself by taking a rigorous course load, including multiple Advanced Placement classes, dual enrollment courses at Río Hondo College, and three years in Pioneer High’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, demonstrating a strong commitment to college readiness.

As one of four children in his family, Barradas has had to overcome obstacles, including housing insecurity, that have threatened to derail his education and dreams. Inspired by his mother’s unwavering confidence in his abilities, Barradas has become known for his strong work ethic and passion for learning, with his teachers praising his problem-solving skills and ability to stay focused on his goals.

For his determination, leadership, and resilience, the Whittier Union Board of Trustees presented Barradas with an Award of Merit during its Oct. 8 Board meeting.

“I am grateful for the support I have received at Pioneer High, from Ms. Medina in the Horizons program to my counselor, Mrs. DelValle,” Barradas said. “I am also forever grateful to my family for their ongoing love and being there for me every step of the way, especially my mom for being my inspiration and my siblings for their encouragement.”

After courageously leaving an unhealthy relationship, Barradas’ mother has devoted her life to her children and played an active role in his academic development by helping to forge a family-school partnership that has brought out the best in Barradas.

Barradas said that in the future he aspires to be a doctor, motivated by his mother’s similar dream, which she was unable to fulfill. Inspired by his older sister, Barradas would like to continue his education at California State University, Long Beach.

“Jesus’ story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education,” Pioneer High Principal Mary Chapman said. “Jesus is a shining example of what our students can achieve with support, guidance, and their own inner strength.”
