WHITTIER – The Whittier Union Adult School hosted its first-ever Career and Job Fair on Oct. 23, attracting over 500 community members and students from the Adult School, Frontier High School and Sierra Vista High School.

Held in conjunction with the Rio Hondo America’s Job Center of California at the Sierra Education Center, the event featured nearly two dozen local employers, including Whittier Union High School District, the Census Bureau, Starbucks, Fed Ex and Defense International, among others, who conducted on-site interviews.

“Our primary mission is help students gain the skills they need to secure employment and empower them to seek the job that suits their needs and goals for success,” Whittier Union Adult School Principal Dr. Margie Moriarty said. “The job fair was a huge success for our students and community members, several of whom were hired on the spot and many others who have scheduled job interviews.”

Many employers have committed to hiring Whittier Union students. The Census Bureau, for instance, plans to hire 80 students at $20 an hour. Fifteen students were hired on the spot and 50 students scored second interviews.

“We are thrilled to celebrate our high school students who brought their questions, enthusiasm and positive attitudes to successfully get hired by our local employers whose support we truly appreciate,” Whittier Union Superintendent Martin Plourde said. “We are especially proud of our Adult School students, who have taken the career training and professional development courses necessary to shine above the crowd. I want to thank our teachers and staff for preparing our students for their futures.”

The Whittier Union Adult School features multiple academic and career pathway programs, from high school equivalency and citizenship to medical careers and school bus driver training. The school will launch its Winter term on Nov. 18. Click here to see the schedule of classes available.
