WEST COVINA, CA – West Covina Unified students and their parents began planning the first steps toward higher education at the fifth annual District College Fair, held Oct. 2 at West Covina High School.

Representatives from nearly 40 colleges and universities answered questions about program offerings, admission and financial aid information for students and their families. Breakout sessions staggered throughout the three-hour event covered such topics as selecting the right school, and NCAA eligibility and scholarships.

“This is a really great event because having all the college resources and reps in one space makes it easier for students and families who don’t know where to go for help,” West Covina High School senior Khine Thu said. “The District is providing an amazing opportunity for people to ask questions and plan their futures.”

Inside West Covina High School’s gymnasium, rows of booths were covered in university colors and gear, with institutions including UC Santa Barbara, Oregon State University, Pasadena City College, Chapman University and the U.S. Naval Academy.

Outside of the gym, food trucks, a kettle corn stand and a District booth offered refreshments and a place to discuss West Covina Unified’s many educational opportunities.

“My son is a freshman and we want to make sure that we are starting him off right and know the steps to get him to college,” West Covina High School parent Carlos Valenzuela said. “We’ve talked to a lot of the recruiters, and we’ve asked a lot of questions that will help us.”

Community service organizations, including the Woman’s Club of West Covina, Camarena Foundation and West Covina Rotary, shared information about local scholarships available to WCUSD students.

“West Covina Unified is dedicated to providing all students a rigorous, high-quality education that inspires college- and career-readiness,” WCUSD Superintendent Charles D. Hinman said. “We are thankful to all the higher education representatives, community partners and school and District staff who contributed to the success of our annual District College Fair.”
