WEST COVINA, CA – Edgewood High School junior Nour Sourakli will spend her summer abroad – studying Spanish language and culture – after earning a Global Navigator Scholarship from CIEE and the International Baccalaureate Organization.

Sourakli’s weighted 4.2 GPA, success in Edgewood’s IB Diploma Programme and passion for other cultures helped her score the scholarship, which will help fund four weeks of studying in the Intensive Spanish Language and Culture program in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about the culture and gaining a better understanding of Spain’s diversity,” Sourakli said. “I was lucky to visit Spain the summer before my freshman year and I loved it – it’s absolutely beautiful.”

Throughout the program, Sourakli will receive a fully immersive educational experience by speaking Spanish at all times, living with a homestay host, taking classes at the local university and exploring local history, art and cuisine.

Sourakli has been involved in West Covina Unified’s IB Continuum since her freshman year and is in her third year of IB Spanish. IB offers the scholarship to promote intercultural awareness and immerse students in different cultures to make a positive impact on society.

“IB has created countless opportunities to get to know different communities and have a better understanding of the world and its diversity,” Sourakli said. “IB has given me the chance to look at colleges abroad, and to know I can overcome the challenges I will face.”

In addition to being an IB student, Sourakli explores her diverse interests through activities like ASB, poetry club and the Bridges peer mentoring program. She plans to study medicine at UC Riverside or UC San Diego and eventually become an emergency room physician.
