WHITTIER – Río Hondo College will host a Homecoming 2020 celebration on Friday, Feb. 21 featuring reunions for nursing program, former basketball players and the Police Academy, free food for the first 500 guests who sign up, and men’s and women’s basketball games.

Students who attend the games will also be eligible to win half-time prizes, which include: two PlayStation4 Destiny games, an Amazon Echo, a 7th-generation iPad and two Chromebooks.

Homecoming returned to the College in 2019 after years on hiatus, drawing several hundred people for reunions and ball games.

“Nothing brings together a community like a good, old-fashioned Homecoming celebration,” Vice President of Student Services Henry Gee said. “Since Río Hondo College doesn’t have a football team, we decided to hold the event around our basketball games. Go Roadrunners!”

Gee, who spearheaded the event’s return, said he expects this year’s event to draw hundreds of more students, community members and alumni from throughout the College’s 50-plus years.

The Police Academy will launch the day’s events with a 1:30 p.m. “All Class Reunion,” hosting former cadets from 1964 to 2020.

At 2 p.m., the College’s nursing program will host alumni at its own special celebration. At 3 p.m., Roadrunner basketball players will hold a reunion in Parking Lot E.

At 4 p.m., students and alumni will also arrive at Parking Lot E for free food and socializing before the basketball games. Alumni will receive decade pins and all guests will receive rally towels, while supplies last.

At 5 p.m., Río Hondo College’s women’s team will play, followed at 7 p.m. by the men’s team. Both games are against East Los Angeles Community College.
