Monrovia Unified third-graders put their multiplication and division skills to the test during the District’s inaugural SWUN Math Bee competition, held on March 14 at Wild Rose Elementary School. The contest went into an overtime round before Mayflower Elementary student Yi Gao was crowned champion of the 15-student field. Gao took home the first-place trophy and a $100 Target gift card. The bee was sponsored by SWUN Math, which provides instruction that adheres to the California standards.
2 Fontana Unified Sisters Advance to State History Day Competition
Sisters Leslie and Alyha Madrigal, students at Summit High and Almeria Middle School, earned top honors in the San Bernardino County History Day competition on March 9 and will advance to the state competition in May. Leslie Madrigal earned first place in the senior individual exhibit category for her project titled “The Non-Proliferation Treaty: The Decision to Save the World,” while Alyha Madrigal took first place in the junior individual exhibit category for her project, “The Battle of Antietam: Conflict over the Power of the Nation.”
5 San Gabriel Unified Students Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists
Five Gabrielino High School seniors – Hugo So, Jannelle Dang, Christopher Lung, Angelina Liang and Benjamin Vuong – were named finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program, placing them among 15,000 finalists selected from the 1.6 million students who apply by taking the PSAT each year.
Henry J. Kaiser High School’s theater program was awarded a $10,000 grant from NBC and the Educational Theater Foundation in recognition of the benefit of these programs in school communities. Kaiser is of one of 50 high schools in the country – and just one of five in California – to receive the grant, which will go toward props, costumes, production expenses and other program necessities.
Monrovia Middle School Hosts Science Night, Features JPL Mars Rover
Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School opened its doors to the community to highlight its coding, computer science and robotics programs on March 8. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory demonstrated a Mars rover replica and other gadgets, sharing with students where computer science skills can take them.
Two San Gabriel Unified Students Named Carson Scholars
Gabrielino High School junior William Tantribeau and senior Janet Han were selected for the 2018 Carson Scholars fund, a $1,000 college scholarship awarded for academic excellence and humanitarian qualities. Students must be nominated by their school and perform community service efforts beyond what their schools require.
Fontana Unified Workshops Address Community Resources
Fontana Unified School District will hold free Parent University workshops from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, highlighting the district’s community partnerships and resources available to FUSD families. The workshops will be at the Piazza Educational Center, 9680 Citrus Ave., Fontana.
Rosemead High School Culinary Arts students are using their kitchen techniques and entrepreneurial skills to serve nutritious breakfasts and fresh-baked treats at the student-run Panther Café, which opens every school day at 6:50 a.m. The Panther Café, which derives all its income from the nearly 150 food items sold per day, will receive a boost in funding during the A Taste and Sound of El Monte/South El Monte event on Thursday, March 22 at Grace Black Auditorium, 3130 Tyler Ave., El Monte.
Future Whittier Union Freshmen Invited to Learn About Schools, Programs
The Whittier Union High School District’s five comprehensive high schools are inviting future freshmen and their parents to attend Future Frosh Night at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 22, where the members of the class of 2022 will receive information about the classes and programs at each campus. Teachers, students and administrators at the high schools will host the eighth-graders. Locations are as follows: California High School, 9800 S. Mills Ave. in the large gym; La Serna High School, 15301 Youngwood Drive in the Locke gym; Pioneer High School, 10800 Benavon St. in the quad; Santa Fe High School, 10400 S. Orr & Day Road, Santa Fe Springs in the Mendez gym; and Whittier High School, 12417 E. Philadelphia St. in the auditorium.
