San Gabriel Unified Elementary Music Program Receives Grant

Roosevelt Elementary’s Music Immersion Experience (MIE) program received a grant from the D’Addario Music Foundation, which will provide program funding and donate products like reeds and strings. The MIE program, which enhances student learning and achievement through immersive music education, is one of 110 organizations to receive a grant from the foundation this year.

Fontana Unified Elementary Schools Receive Backpack Donations

Fontana Unified kicked off the 2018-19 school year on Aug. 6 with new campus leaders, expanded early educational programs and instructional opportunities. At South Tamarind and Shadow Hills elementary schools, students received a surprise visit from Golden State Foods representatives, who donated backpacks full of school supplies. El Monte Union Students Take First Steps Toward Higher Ed at Annual College Night

El Monte Union High School students explored colleges and other post-secondary opportunities during the District’s annual College Night and Career Resource Fair on Sept. 17 at South El Monte High School. Colleges and universities that participated included UC Berkeley, UCLA, Cal State Fullerton, Rio Hondo College and the University of La Verne. The event also featured representatives from various student support services and college access programs.

El Monte Union to Welcome Families, Students with Back-to-School Nights

El Monte Union’s high schools will host back-to-school nights for students and their families, enabling parents to connect with teachers and staff and learn about goals for each class. Events will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the following comprehensive high schools: Thursday, Aug. 23 at South El Monte High School; Tuesday, Aug. 28 at Rosemead High School; Thursday, Aug. 30 at El Monte High School; Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Arroyo High School; and Thursday, Sept. 13 at Mountain View High School. Fernando R. Ledesma High School will hold its event from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20.

Rio Hondo College Welcomes Students For Fall Semester

Rio Hondo College will greet students with a new major, a slate of student support services and a pantry resource when the fall semester begins on Saturday, Aug. 18. The College added an Associate of Science program in homeland security to prepare students to entry-level jobs or to pursue advanced studies at a four-year university. Student support services include dedicated classes to guide students through their courses of study. The RioSource Room pantry opened in 2017-18 to assist students struggling with food insecurity. The room also helps students connect to other services.

San Gabriel Unified to Kick Off 2018-19 School Year Aug. 20

San Gabriel Unified School District will welcome students for the new school year on Monday, Aug. 20. Students will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of academic and enrichment programs, including Spanish dual-language immersion, music immersion and STEM instruction in elementary school, mock trial team and AVID at the middle school and a nationally acclaimed speech and debate program at the high school.

San Gabriel Unified Middle School Mentors to Welcome New Students

Jefferson Middle School’s incoming sixth-graders will get to know their new middle school during a morning of friendly competition and group bonding during the Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) program orientation, held 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 13. WEB transforms eighth-graders into mentors and teaches them about leadership while providing sixth-graders with a sense of support and school spirit.
