Bassett High Students to Receive Laptops via Digital Learning Initiative

Bassett High School 10th-graders will receive devices that can be used as laptops or tablets from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 28 as part of Bassett Unified’s Digital Learning Initiative, launched this year. The initiative will provide devices to students across the district over the next four years and connect families to low-cost internet. Students in third and sixth grades are also receiving devices this year. Bassett High is at 755 N. Ardilla Ave., La Puente.

Whittier Union Schools Hosts Back to School Nights

Whittier Union High School District’s five comprehensive high schools are inviting parents and students to their Back to School Night events, which will provide attendees the opportunity to learn about the school’s academic and extra-curricular programs and how to ensure student success.

Rio Hondo College Offers Degree, Certificate Programs in Rapidly Growing Homeland Security Field

Rio Hondo College has created Associate of Science and Certificate of Achievement academic offerings in homeland security, open for enrollment this fall. The interdisciplinary program incorporates courses in fire technology, wildland fire technology, administration of justice, geographic information services and cybersecurity policy. Career fields open to graduates in homeland security have the potential for more than 400,000 job openings by 2024.

Lynwood Unified Welcomes 15,000 Students Back to School

Lynwood Unified School District is welcoming back more than 15,000 students to its campuses with increased technology and expanded programs that will boost student success. The District will give students increased college access through the College Promise partnership between LUSD and Compton College, which will provide graduates with priority registration, guaranteed admission, financial aid assistance and programs to help with college readiness starting with the high school graduating class of 2019.The District’s high schools will have new leadership as Ana Gonzalez takes the helm as principal of Lynwood High while Bambi Smith assumes the post at Firebaugh High School.

Rio Hondo College Observatory Holds Free Stargazing

Rio Hondo College's Gordon D. Crowell Astrophysical Observatory will hold a free stargazing event from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to welcome Roadrunners back for fall semester. Lynwood Unified Educators Prepare for School Year at Summer Institute

Lynwood Unified staff members received new training and discussed site initiatives in preparation for the new school year during a three-day professional development Aug. 14-16 at Firebaugh High School. Teachers of all grades and staff members met to solidify school culture, review data and strategize for the year. The event reviewed programs like Advancement Via Individual Determination and the new Journeys reading program.

Fontana Unified Educator Named a County Teacher of the Year

Shadow Hills Elementary third-grade teacher Theresa Pearce was named a San Bernardino County 2018 Teacher of the Year. Pearce, who was named the district’s Teacher of the Year, has taught in Fontana Unified for 18 years. Pearce will be recognized by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools along with fellow honorees in October.

Gabrielino High Student Gives Back to San Gabriel Unified Elementary

Gabrielino High junior Jaden Raymundo completed his Eagle Scout project at Roosevelt Elementary on Aug. 5 by leading his troop in building a chessboard and two benches near the school’s gardens. Bassett High Integrates Student Input Into Lesson and School Planning

Bassett High students offered input on lesson planning for their first day of school through a partnership with Design School X (DSX), which teaches students how to create change in their communities. DSX representatives met with teachers, staff, students and parents on Aug. 3 for an all-day training seminar, seeking input on how to improve parent engagement, the freshman experience, school image and first day of school. Students also offered input when fall semester started on Aug. 8. Photos are available.

Monrovia Unified Welcomes More than 400 Freshmen on First Day

More than 400 Monrovia High freshmen on Aug. 15 signed white graduation gowns, which will be hung in the main hallway of their school throughout the year to remind and motivate them in their academic and personal goals to graduate. The first two hours of their first day of school featured motivational speeches and advice on how to navigate their high school lives over the next four years.
