Baldwin Park Unified Elementary Earns National Urban School Honor

Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School is being recognized as a silver medal winner in the 2018 America’s Best Urban Schools competition for its success in serving students from ethnic minority populations and low socio-economic households. To receive the honor, all student demographic groups, including English language learners, at the highly diverse campus had to score above state averages on California’s English language arts and math standardized tests. Just four California schools were chosen as medal winners.

Baldwin Park Unified Students, Leaders to Take Part in Annual City Parade

Baldwin Park Unified students, teachers, administrators and Board of Education members will participate in Baldwin Park’s 62nd Anniversary Parade at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. The parade is themed “Commemorating Community Excellence” and will feature the Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high school marching bands and color guards. The parade route runs along Baldwin Park Boulevard and conclude at Morgan Park. The grand marshal is Alysha Del Valle, traffic anchor and reporter for NBC 4’s “Today in LA.”

Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista High to Hold Field Show Tournament

Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista High School will hold its 32nd annual Field Show Tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Twenty-four marching bands will perform with Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools taking the field at 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively. An awards ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. Sierra Vista High School is at 3600 Frazier St., Baldwin Park.

Lynwood Elementary School Hosts Families at STEM, College Prep Event

More than 100 Washington Elementary School families engaged in STEM and college prep workshops during a Noche de Ciencias event on Oct. 26 on Washington’s campus. California State University, Long Beach partnered with Washington on the event, which exposed students to fun activities like engineering bridges. Noche de Ciencias is a national program that promotes engagement in STEM among the Hispanic and other underrepresented communities.

El Monte Union to Celebrate Visual Arts at Annual District Art Show

El Monte Union High School District will host its annual student art show and reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at El Monte High School, 3048 Tyler Ave., El Monte. The event recognizes students who earned accolades in the Los Angeles County Fair Art Competition. Students will be awarded certificates of recognition for work in drawing, painting, ceramics, graphic design, creative writing and more.

Fontana Unified to Hold College Application Kickoff Events

Fontana Unified will hold a series of college application days at its five comprehensive high schools, furthering efforts to promote college and career readiness. Students will receive support as they complete college applications during the school day. The college application days will be held Thursday, Nov. 1 at A.B. Miller High; Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Fontana High; Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Summit High; Thursday, Nov. 15 at Kaiser High; and Friday, Nov. 16 at Jurupa Hills High.

Baldwin Park High School to Host 32nd Annual Field Show Tournament

Baldwin Park High School will hold its 32nd annual Field Show Tournament at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. Twenty-two marching bands will perform, with Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista and Baldwin Park high schools closing the event with performances at 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. An awards ceremony will begin at 9:30 p.m. Baldwin Park High School is at 3900 Puente Ave, Baldwin Park.

Whittier Union Releases 3 Initial Draft Trustee Area Maps

Whittier Union High School District has released three initial draft trustee area maps as it shifts from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections, effective November 2020. The District is seeking public input on the initial draft maps – NDC Green Map, NDC Orange Map and NDC Purple Map – which were developed by professional demographers based on comments from previous public hearings. The public may submit input regarding how the trustee areas are divided through comment boxes available at the five comprehensive high schools, District office and WUHSD District Formation Process website, www.elections.wuhsd.org. The District will host two rounds of community open houses during which attendees may provide structured input on the maps. The first round will take place 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26 at Whittier High School; 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Santa Fe High School; and 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28. A second round will be held in December.

Students Bring Flowers, Pennies to Celebrate Margaret Heath Day

Margaret Heath Elementary School students honored their school’s namesake by bringing bouquets of flowers and bags of pennies to campus to celebrate Margaret Heath Day in a special ceremony on Oct. 5. Continuing a tradition that began in 1951, Margaret Heath Elementary students presented pennies – donations from their families and neighbors – to help fund a scholarship named in Heath’s honor.
