El Monte City School District Boosts State Dashboard Performance

El Monte City School District’s Cleminson School demonstrated growth in multiple areas on the California School Dashboard, a tool that gives parents, students and educators access to important school and district data. Cleminson students boosted scores on California’s English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests. The school’s ELA scores increased 15.8 percentage points from 2017-18 while math scores increased 19.4 percentage points. San Gabriel Unified Elementary Celebrates Cultural Diversity, Inclusivity

Coolidge Elementary School celebrated diversity and inclusivity during International/Indigenous Week from March 11-15. Students enjoyed presentations about a variety of cultures from parents, staff, community members and native experts; represented their own heritage during a dress-up parade; and practiced artwork and staged musical performances highlighting various holidays. Highlighted cultures included Lebanese, Filipino, Ghanaian, Gujarati, Burmese, Tongva, Sikangu Lakota, Dutch, Chinese, Mayan, Jewish and Irish. Photos are available.

Baldwin Park Unified Chooses North Park Student as Board Representative

North Park Continuation High School junior Jasmeen Sanchez is the new student board member for the remainder of the 2018-19 academic year. A member of North Park’s Associated Student Body and leadership team, Sanchez will present her first report on Tuesday, April 23 at Baldwin Park Unified’s Board of Education meeting. San Gabriel Unified Selects Assistant Superintendent

San Gabriel Unified’s Governing Board on March 12 selected Jim Symonds as assistant superintendent of educational services, effective for the 2019-20 school year. Symonds, who has served as McKinley Elementary’s principal in San Gabriel Unified since 2014, brings more than 29 years of public education experience to his new role.

Lynwood’s Washington Elementary Honored as Top Los Angeles School

Washington Elementary School was recognized on May 4 as one of LA's Top Public Schools for underserved students during the Top Schools LA: Leading the Way for Educational Equity conference at the University of Southern California. Washington received the distinction for serving a significant number of low-income students and narrowing the achievement gap during the 2017-18 school year. Results from the 2017-18 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics were a component to the evaluation process. At Washington Elementary, 49.4 percent of students met or exceeded state ELA proficiency standards – up from 45.2 percent the previous year.

El Monte Union High School District’s Arroyo High School has earned the first College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in AP Computer Science Principles courses. Arroyo was recognized for either reaching 50 percent or higher female representation in the AP course or having a percentage of the female computer science examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population.

Whittier Union Schools Recognized for Boosting Female Representation in STEM Courses

Two Whittier Union high schools have earned the first College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in their AP Computer Science Principles courses. La Serna and Whittier high schools were recognized for either reaching 50 percent or higher female representation in the AP course or having a percentage of the female computer science examinees meeting or exceeding that of the school’s female population. Out of more than 18,000 secondary schools worldwide that offer AP courses, the schools are among 685 to accomplish this feat.

Baldwin Park Unified Schools Selected for Top Los Angeles Schools Award

Kenmore Elementary and Santa Fe Fundamental School were recognized for strong results in English language arts and mathematics proficiency for low-income African American and Latino students in 2017-18, earning the Los Angeles County Top Schools Award. Kenmore and Santa Fe are two of 279 schools selected for the first annual report Top Los Angeles Public Schools for Underdeserved Students. Photos are available.

West Covina Unified Establishes International Baccalaureate Continuum

Students throughout the San Gabriel Valley can pursue a rigorous, globally focused education pathway from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade through a newly established International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum at West Covina Unified, a state-certified district of choice. Fontana Unified Students to Compete at State History Day Contest

Summit High School students Leslie Madrigal and Brian Garay and Almeria Middle School student Alyha Madrigal are heading to the History Day California competition, Friday, May 10 to Sunday, May 12, after taking first place in the senior group exhibit and junior individual exhibit categories, respectively, at San Bernardino County History Day.
