West Covina Unified Establishes TK-12 IB Continuum
Students throughout the San Gabriel Valley can pursue a rigorous, globally focused education pathway from transitional kindergarten through 12th grade through a newly established International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum at West Covina Unified, a state-certified district of choice. El Monte City School District to Host Speech Competition
El Monte City School District will host its fourth annual speech competition for more than 400 of its sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at 9 a.m. Monday, April 15. Each student is scored based on a written essay and their presentation of the essay. Sixth-graders based their essays on the question “How can conflict lead to a positive outcome?” while seventh- and eighth-graders had a choice between “Without conflict there can be no progress” and “Conflict is necessary for a healthy democracy.”
Baldwin Park High School Students to Participate in Community Art Show
Baldwin Park High School art students will showcase their work at the Baldwin Park Arts and Recreation Center with a special reception at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 11 at 14403 Pacific Ave., Baldwin Park. The art show, titled “Canvases etc.,” will be open to the community from April 8 through May 20. Gallery hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Gabrielino High Expo Showcases Visual, Performing Arts Programs
San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School showcased student talent and award-winning visual and performing arts (VAPA) courses during the VAPA Expo, held during the school’s open house on March 28. Amid papier-mâché art installations, ceramic masks and paintings resembling stained glass windows, Gabrielino’s choirs performed songs from “Chicago,” while the string orchestra performed hits like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and concert band jammed to “Isn’t She Lovely.”
Paramount Unified School District has partnered with Compton College to launch an Administration of Justice Early College Program, emphasizing the District’s key focus of creating college and career ready graduates. Students will have the chance to earn their Associates Degree for Transfer in Administration of Justice, while earning a high school diploma at the same time. The program begins in summer 2019 with a cohort of up to 30 ninth-grade students.
Bennett-Kew Elementary School will cut the ribbon on a new playground beginning at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 11 at the school’s campus, 11710 S Cherry Ave., Inglewood. The school is updating its facilities as it prepares to expand to accept sixth-grade students in fall 2019 when it launches a Leadership Academy to prepare kids for success inside the classroom and out.
Buena Park School District’s GATE Super Saturdays Nurture Creativity
Buena Park School District’s GATE program has held bi-annual Super Saturdays for 13 years, bringing together students from across the District for competitions that focus on engineering. The most recent Super Saturday tasked about 70 students in teams of five to seven to build pasta- and paper-based structures to guide marbles into plastic cups.
Rosemead High Team Advances to the Science Olympiad State Final
The Rosemead High School Science Olympiad team will return to the Southern California State Science Olympiad Tournament for the first time since 2016. The final will be held Saturday, April 6 at Caltech. The 15-member Panther squad scored a fourth-place finish at the nearly 30-team Los Angeles County Science Olympiad on Jan. 26. Every member of the Panther team placed in the top six in at least one of the 23 events.
Lynwood High School Hosts Red Cross Blood Drive
Lynwood High School hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive for students and staff on April 4. The drive was open to anyone 16 and up and promoted a community of giving. All donors received a free American Red Cross t-shirt.
Lynwood Elementary School Hosts College Fair
Washington Elementary School parents and families learned a student-run lesson in colleges and universities during the school’s College Fair on March 28. Students prepared presentations that showcased college options and answered questions during a tour for those in attendance.
