Whittier Union Approves 2019-20 Spending Plan
Whittier Union will continue to offer an after-school credit recovery program and provide additional support classes during the school day as part of its 2019-20 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and budget. The LCAP aims to ensure students master the standards and content the first time they take a course to successfully meet college entrance requirements. For 2019-20, Whittier Union will invest $24 million to develop programs specifically targeting its high-needs groups: economically disadvantaged students, foster youth and English learners.
Gabrielino High Speech and Debate Student Takes 4th Place at Nationals
Felicia Tang, a speech and debate student at San Gabriel Unified’s Gabrielino High School, finished fourth in Informative Speaking at the 2019 National Speech and Debate Tournament, held June 16-21. Tang also auto-qualified for the 2020 Nationals based on her stellar performance. This is Gabrielino High School’s 23 appearance at the national tournament in the school’s 25-year history. Monrovia Unified Approves 2019-20 LCAP Budget
During a regular meeting of the Board of Education on June 26, Monrovia Unified moved to approve the LCAP for the 2019-20 school year, focusing on its goals of high academic achievement, all students reading at grade level by third grade and increased student engagement. The major actions outlined in the LCAP are access to experienced teachers, high-quality instructional materials and well-maintained facilities.
Inglewood Unified High School OK’d as District Charter School
City Honors International Preparatory High School will partner with Cambridge Assessment International Education to become a charter school operated by Inglewood Unified. Cambridge will offer college- and career-readiness curriculum, provide assessments and help the school implement innovative approaches to instruction. Photos are available.
Monrovia Unified Hosts Summer Music and Theater Institute
Monrovia Unified will serve 100 students during the ninth annual Summer Music and Theater Institute from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 9 at Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School, 148 W. Duarte Road, Monrovia. Classes include vocal and instrumental music instruction, theater, theory, rhythm and sight singing. The institute is free. Classes are taught by District music teachers. All instruments will be provided.
Monrovia Unified’s Mary Poppins Summer Production Staged July 12
Monrovia Unified’s “Mary Poppins” summer production is flying into the Louise K. Taylor Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. Friday, July 12. The theater is at Monrovia High School, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. Additional performances will take place Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14.
Lynwood Unified to Provide Summer Meals for All Children
Lynwood Unified is providing fee summer meals for children 18 and under at all middle and elementary schools through its Nutrition Services Department summer program. All children, whether they are enrolled in summer school or not, can receive breakfast from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m. through Friday, Aug. 9.
Inglewood Unified Students Chosen for Summer Transportation Institute
Seven Inglewood Unified students have been selected to take part in the National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI), offered by the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology at Cal State L.A. The program, which runs through Monday, July 15, is designed to introduce disadvantaged secondary school students to transportation-related careers. Photos are available.
West Covina Unified broke ground on a science and career technical education (CTE) building at West Covina High School on June 25, commemorating the District’s latest effort to create innovative, effective learning environments. The 28,000-square-foot science and CTE building will house new chemistry and biology labs, a state-of-the-art video production lab and broadcast studio, engineering computer labs and robotics spaces that feature a competition arena and manufacturing lab. The $15.7 million project, funded by the voter-approved Measure ES, is expected to be completed by fall 2020.
