Inglewood Unified Principal Honored for 41 Years of Service
Oak Street Elementary Principal Richard Barter is retiring this summer after 41 years of service in a variety of roles with the Inglewood Unified School District. Barter was honored at the District’s Board of Education meeting on June 19.
Monrovia High School Earns California Honor Roll Recognition
Monrovia High School has been recognized by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence with a place on the 2018-19 California Honor Roll for narrowing the achievement gap on state standardized tests. Monrovia is listed as a Star School, a category indicating that it enrolls a high percentage of students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Study Links Bassett Unified Teacher Experience to Test Score Success
A new study from the Learning Policy Institute in Palo Alto lists Bassett Unified as one of 156 school districts where teacher qualifications and preparation are linked to higher-than-expected test scores in math and English language arts for African American and Hispanic students. Baldwin Park Unified Elementary Named to California Honor Roll
Baldwin Park Unified’s Kenmore Elementary School’s success in preparing students to perform at grade level and creating lifelong learners has earned the school a spot on the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) 2018-19 Honor Roll. Kenmore Elementary was selected based on overall performance on state standardized tests, with 64 percent of ethnic minority students and 63 percent of socioeconomically disadvantaged students meeting or exceeding English language arts (ELA) standards.
Paramount Promise Offers Students Pathway to Free Community College
A new partnership between Paramount Unified School District and Compton College is giving students new opportunities for post-secondary education, including two years of free tuition for full-time students and financial assistance for books and course supplies. Called the Paramount Promise, the program provides students with a pathway to Compton College and, potentially, UC Irvine.
El Monte Union Goes 1:1 for 2019-20 School Year
El Monte Union is gearing up to launch its new Access for All digital learning initiative, which will put technology into the hands of every student and eliminate barriers to learning, ensuring their academic success at school and at home. This fall, El Monte Union students will receive their own dedicated Chromebook laptops, carrying cases and chargers to use at home and school under a 1:1 digital learning initiative. The District will also provide students with limited or no at-home Internet access and the opportunity to apply for a free MiFi wireless hotspot through a 1 Million Project Foundation grant. The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 20.
Baldwin Park Unified Offers Summer Breakfasts, Lunches
Baldwin Park children ages 1 through 18 can receive free breakfasts and lunches Mondays through Fridays at nine Baldwin Park Unified schools through the Seamless Summer Meal Program. Five elementary schools, a middle school and a junior high school are serving breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and lunch from noon to 12:30 p.m. through Friday, July 5. Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools are serving breakfast and lunch through Thursday, July 11. For more information, call the Nutrition Services Department at 626-856-4224.
Whittier High School to Honor Alumnus with Memorial Service
Whittier High School will host a Celebration of Life at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29 for Class of 1955 graduate William C. Gordon, who died in March at age 82. A renowned author and attorney, Gordon donated more than $230,000 to the school. The event will be in the William C. Gordon Library at Whittier High, 12417 Philadelphia St., Whittier.
Lynwood Unified Set to Begin Summer Bridge Enrichment Program
Lynwood Unified will help K-8 students achieve year-round success through a Summer Bridge program beginning Monday, June 24 at all elementary and middle schools. Students will study a math-focused curriculum and enjoy creative play for health and fitness through extended learning nonprofit Think Together. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
Baldwin Park children ages 1 through 18 may receive weekday breakfasts and lunches free this summer at nine Baldwin Park Unified schools through the Seamless Summer Meal Program.
