Lynwood Unified School District will welcome back about 14,000 students to campuses with improved facilities and new programs when classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 21. The District has launched a new Mental Health Project that will provide occupational therapy and assessments to students and their families. In the classroom, the District will offer every student a personal tech device and update tech programs through its partnership with the League of Innovative Schools – a coalition of K-12 school districts that work together to inspire students through technology education. In October, Lynwood Unified will celebrate a new athletic field.
Paramount Unified to Welcome Students with New Technology
Paramount Unified School District students will return to the classroom with increased technology when classes begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21. The District has reached a 1:1 device-to-student ratio, with each student in grades three through 12 receiving a Chromebook laptop. In addition, Paramount Unified has launched an Entrepreneurship and App Development course that teaches young scholars coding while helping them develop an entrepreneurial mindset.
El Monte City School District to Hold Back to School Nights
El Monte City School District will hold Back to School Nights at Cherrylee, Potrero and Shirpser schools on Wednesday, Aug. 28; Cortada, Durfee, Gidley, Rio Hondo and Wright schools on Thursday, Aug. 29; LeGore School on Wednesday, Sept. 4; and Cleminson and Wilkerson schools on Thursday, Sept. 5. Each event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. and allow parents and community members to connect with teachers and staff to learn about academic goals for the 2019-20 school year and tour the campus.
El Monte Union Engineering Program to Welcome Gray Fox for First Day
Mountain View High School is launching year two of its Zoo Crew: Engineers Gone Wild! career technical education pathway on the first day of the 2019-20 school year with a visit from a gray fox, courtesy of the Nature of Wildworks. The program will take place from 10:35 to 11:25 a.m. and 12:10 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 in the school’s media center, 2900 Parkway Drive, El Monte. The Zoo Crew engineering pathway provides students the opportunity to study the health and well-being of animals in the wild and encourage their interest in careers architectural design and engineering fields.
Bonita Unified Prepares for Purposeful Start to School Year
Bonita Unified will start the 2019-20 school year on Monday, Aug. 19 with a renewed focus on achieving academic goals through the core values of equity, mastery and a focus on results. A staff orientation day and an all-staff Welcome Back assembly helped energize educators and staff throughout Bonita Unified for their work in guiding about 10,000 students to live their purpose.
New Rio Hondo College President to Welcome New Students on Aug. 19
Dr. Arturo Reyes, named the 10th superintendent/president of Rio Hondo College in July, will welcome new students to their first day of college from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19. Rio Hondo College is starting the new year with a new program in homeland security, increased student support services and signature programs in policing, nursing, firefighting, law school preparation and automotive technology.
Baldwin Park Unified certificated and classified employees rang in the start of the 2019-20 academic year with the District’s annual Welcome Back event on Aug. 12, featuring breakfast, refreshments and an address from motivational speaker Tyler Durham.
Inglewood Unified School District will welcome back students with expanded grade offerings when the new school year begins at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19. Three of the District’s schools are adding grades and redefining curriculum. In addition, Monroe-Woodworth TK-8 Academy is beginning the second year of its expansion, offering intensive STEM curriculum and facilities upgrades. The District will offer increased student support through a partnership with City Year, a nonprofit that will assist teachers inside the classroom and through after-school programs.
Across Whittier Union, 2,727 members of the Class of 2023 participated in Freshman First Day activities that are hosted annually by student Link Crew teams at each school in an effort to build connections with freshmen and ease their transition into high school. The program is now in its 15th year. Overall, the District welcomed over 11,100 students to its campuses.
Buena Park School District’s campuses were humming with excited greetings from reunited classmates and tearful sendoffs from new parents as they dropped off their children on Aug. 13 for the first day of school. The District welcomed more than 4,520 students across seven campuses, each adorned with colorful banners and chalk messages to encourage responsible behaviors in students.
