West Covina Unified 2019-20 School Year to Begin Aug. 15

West Covina Unified School District will kick off the 2019-20 school year on Thursday, Aug. 15. WCUSD will launch new programs – including Mandarin dual language immersion – and provide a variety of academic offerings, such as California’s only TK-12 International Baccalaureate continuum, Spanish dual-language immersion, TK-12 visual and performing arts instruction, college-prep and career tech courses and STEM instruction.

Baldwin Park Unified to Kick Off 2019-20 School Year on Aug. 15

Baldwin Park Unified School District will welcome students for the new school year on Thursday, Aug. 15. Students will have the opportunity to partake in a variety of award-winning academic programs, including Spanish dual-language immersion, coding and robotics, visual and performing arts music instruction, and college- and career-prep courses.

Monrovia High School Hosts Orientation for Incoming Freshmen

Monrovia High School’s Link Crew will host an orientation for incoming freshmen from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at Monrovia High School, 845 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia. Freshmen will meet their link crew leaders, tour the campus and participate in leadership-building activities. A second orientation from 7:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14 will feature a presentation from a keynote speaker, a commitment to graduate station where students will sign white graduation gowns and a chance to meet with student and teacher leaders.

New Student Registration at El Monte City School District

El Monte City School District is hosting new student registration at the Jeff Seymour Family Center through Thursday, Aug. 8. Parents who wish to register their children must provide proof of birth, proof of address and an immunization card. Registration hours are Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Jeff Seymour Family Center is at 10900 Mulhall St., El Monte.

Inglewood Unified Sixth-graders to Attend Leadership Academy

Bennett-Kew Elementary School sixth-graders will attend a three-day Leadership Academy to prepare for the school year from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 6 through Thursday, Aug. 8. Students will participate in orientations, team-building sessions and a leadership project on the Bennett-Kew campus, 11710 S. Cherry Ave., Inglewood.

Baldwin Park Unified to Join in City’s National Night Out

Baldwin Park Unified School District will join in the City of Baldwin Park’s 36th annual National Night Out, a community-building event that encourages police and community partnerships with a 1.5-mile march from Baldwin Park City Hall to the Grocery Outlet parking lot. The march will start at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 and will include giveaways and raffles, food and drinks.

Bassett Unified to Participate in National Night Out

Bassett Unified School District will be joining the City of La Puente’s National Night Out event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6 at La Puente Park 501 N. Glendora Ave., La Puente. The event will feature live entertainment, free activities for the whole family and special giveaways.

West Covina Unified to Hold Meet and Greet for Mandarin Dual Language Program

West Covina Unified’s Orangewood Elementary will hold a meet and greet for its Mandarin Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, providing families with an opportunity to learn more about the program before it launches on Aug. 15. The event is open to families interested in enrolling in the inaugural kindergarten class. Parents can meet their child’s DLI teacher, learn about the benefits of bilingualism and biliteracy and tour the campus. Orangewood Elementary is at 1440 S. Orange Ave., West Covina.

Lynwood Unified School Board President Named to State’s Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP)

Lynwood Unified Board of Education President Gary Hardie Jr. has been appointed to the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) Project Grant Advisory Committee, a group of educational leaders who will advise on projects that provide college opportunities to underserved students and families. Hardie was appointed by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon on July 18 after having spent more than a decade working in public education. In addition to serving on the Lynwood Board of Education since 2014, Hardie serves on the city of Lynwood’s Personnel Board, California Advancing Pathways for Students Board, California AfterSchool Network Leadership Team and is the Vice President of the California Association of Black School Educators.
