Fontana Unified Launches New District Websites
Fontana Unified School District premiered a sleek new District website on Sept. 3, providing families and community members with easier access to information through a user-friendly format. Websites for Fontana Unified’s 45 schools will roll out over the next few months, employing a student-centered, modern layout that mirrors the District website. The sites were created through a partnership with education website developer Blackboard.
Lynwood Unified to Hold College and Career Conference
Lynwood Unified will inspire students to pursue college and career paths during the 20th annual College and Career Conference from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Firebaugh High School, 5246 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Lynwood. The conference will feature college workshops and representatives from universities.
Rio Hondo College Art Gallery will hold a reception at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19 for its new show, Cuentista, which features works by seven artists as part of the fifth annual SUR:biennial art project. The gallery is one of seven galleries to present independently curated exhibits to showcase works influenced by the cultures and artistic traditions of Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Rio Hondo’s show runs through Thursday, Oct. 3. The College is at 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier.
Five Fontana Unified elementary schools – Canyon Crest, Randall Pepper, Shadow Hills, South Tamarind and Tokay – will partner with digital curriculum provider Discovery Education for a multiyear program that includes teacher training and digital resources to expand K-5 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum. The schools are receiving access to digital tools, including STEM Connect, which provides course materials for K-5 students and gives teachers the option of integrating up to eight course units into their curriculum.
Buena Park School District’s Gilbert School held its Back to School Night on Aug. 29, with teachers and administrators providing classroom tours, detailing updates to the curriculum and explaining the school’s new Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program for students in first, fifth and sixth grades.
Monrovia High School’s Cat City student section – all sporting green to represent the school – cheered as the Monrovia Unified Board of Education kicked off a grand reopening for Wildcat Stadium on Aug. 30 during the Wildcat varsity football team’s first home game of the year. Field upgrades completed over summer included changing out an aging rubber pellet infill for a cool-fill product that decreases turf temperature.
West Covina Unified’s Mt. SAC Early College Academy will hold its first information session of the 2019-20 year at 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, providing details about the benefits of attending West Covina Unified’s flagship dual-enrollment public high school. Academy students can earn a high school diploma and up to two years of free, transferable college credit simultaneously. Students from Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties are eligible to apply. Mt. SAC Early College Academy is at 2226 E. Rio Verde Drive, West Covina.
More than 50 Potrero School students jumped, cheered and grinned during an Aug. 23 assembly, where they received free backpacks filled with supplies such as pencils, notebooks and erasers, courtesy of Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center employees. The El Monte City School District received 850 backpacks for students across its 14 schools. This is the first year that Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center employees have donated backpacks and supplies to the District.

Inglewood Unified School Provides Students with New Supplies
Inglewood Unified School District community members gifted backpacks, pencils, notebooks and other supplies during a Back to School Drive at Warren Lane Arts Academy. The items were delivered to the campus during the first week of school, which officially kicked off on Aug. 20, offering children essential tools to thrive throughout the year.
