Fontana School Police Department officers are displaying pink patches on their uniforms during October, signaling their support for breast cancer awareness and research for a cure. The department is engaged in the 2019 Pink Patch Project, a nationwide awareness effort in which pink versions of an agency’s uniform patches are sold to raise funds to research, treatment and care.
Lynwood High School Students Explore Classic Art during Getty Center Trip
Vista High School students strolled the grounds of The Getty Center while learning lessons about Greek, Roman and Etruscan art during a field trip on Oct. 8. A tour guide accompanied the students to provide information about the works of art.
Monrovia Unified Hosts Lights on After School Celebration
Monrovia Unified School District will take part in the nationwide Lights on After School event from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Clifton Middle School, 226 S. Ivy Ave., Monrovia. The event is a celebration of the positive impact that after-school programs have on students and their families. It will feature student-led activities and enrichment, a student recognition ceremony and a barbecue for students and families.
Inglewood Unified Students Showcase Projects during STEAM Day
Students at Inglewood Unified’s Payne P-8 STEAM Academy presented projects showcasing the results of their exploration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics during the school’s STEAM Day on Oct. 4. Parents and community members were invited to experience the projects, which included a pop-a-shot machine, foosball table, maze and other fun activities.
Rio Hondo College will hold its second annual Undocumented Student Week of Action from Monday, Oct. 14 to Friday, Oct. 18. The event, themed “Dream to Believe,” will feature social events, a fund-raiser promoting legal protections, political activities, a family night, personal talks by undocumented students and the inaugural UndocuRio Walk/Run on Friday. Events will be held daily at the College, 3600 Workman Mill Road, Whittier.
Bonita Unified students are scoring among the highest in the state on standardized tests, boosting scores by as much as 33 percent over five years and achieving proficiency levels in excess of 70 percent in English language arts (ELA) and 60 percent in math. Scores for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) released this week for tests taken in spring 2019 place Bonita Unified among the top 10 percent of unified school districts in California.
West Covina Unified students and their parents began planning the first steps toward higher education at the fifth annual District College Fair, held Oct. 2 at West Covina High School. Representatives from nearly 40 colleges and universities answered questions about program offerings, admission and financial aid information for students and their families. Breakout sessions staggered throughout the three-hour event covered such topics as selecting the right school, and NCAA eligibility and scholarships.
