Río Hondo College Board of Trustees Returns Officers for Second Year of Service

Río Hondo College’s Board of Trustees endorsed a second year of leadership from President Oscar Valladares, Vice President Rosaelva Lomeli and Clerk Vicky Santana on Dec. 11, 2019 during its annual reorganization meeting. Valladares and Lomeli, both elected in 2018, were named to board leadership positions in December 2018, and elevated to the presidency and vice presidency midway through 2019; Santana was named clerk at that time.

West Covina High Basketball Players Achieve 1,000-point Milestone

West Covina High School seniors Lauren Bustillos and Nikki Thompson celebrated scoring 1,000 career points as part of West Covina High’s girls basketball team. Bustillos and Thompson were recognized for their accomplishments during a pregame ceremony on Dec. 1.

El Monte City School District Boosts Literacy, Test Scores

El Monte City School District’s reading programs are boosting English language arts test scores as well as helping to narrow achievement gaps and nurturing a love of literacy in students. Durfee and LeGore schools have shown especially strong improvements on state standardized tests over the last four years – with Durfee increasing 20 percentage points and LeGore increasing 10 percentage points.

West Covina High School Performing Arts Stage Winter Performances

West Covina High School’s performing arts students staged winter performances in December, delighting the community with their vocal, instrumental and theatrical talents. The vocal music department’s ‘Sounds of the Season’ concert on Dec. 6 featured traditional holiday classics; the instrumental music concert on Dec. 10 showcased symphonic band, jazz ensemble, wind ensemble and band and color guard. Fledgling theater students performed one-act plays during the Dec. 11 showcase.

Fontana Unified Middle School Students Display Computer Expertise during Ed Tech Showcase

Southridge Tech Middle School students programmed robots, raced battery-powered motorcars, performed science experiments and displayed their college-bound spirit during the school’s second annual Educational Technology Showcase on Dec. 4. Students exhibited their computer skills, navigating through more than a dozen digital learning platforms used in the classroom, including Microsoft, Google, Discovery Education, C-STEM and ConnectEd.

Lynwood Unified to Give Away Books at Childhood Literacy Event

Early Childhood Education will host a literacy event in all ECE classrooms from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20, during which each child will be gifted with a new book to take home. Parents and students will make crafts and sing seasonal songs before each child selects a book to develop a home library.

Inglewood High School to Host Parent AVID Night

Inglewood High School will showcase programs that help students prepare for college success during Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Night at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. Educators and students will present class projects and outline the college prep process for parents. The school is at 231 S. Grevillea Ave., Inglewood.

El Monte High Football Team to Compete for State CIF Championship Title

Over 60 football players and coaches from El Monte High Schools are making their way to Crescent City in Northern California to compete against Del Norte High School for the CIF State Division 5A Championship title at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. This would be the team's first championship since 1930 if they clinch the title. This season, the team was named 2019 Mission Valley League Football Champions, CIF-SS Division 12 Champions and CIF State Regional Champions.

Whittier Union Bands Unite to Perform at Annual Christmas Parade

Whittier Union High School District’s comprehensive high school marching bands – composed of over 400 students – will perform as one for the first time ever during the 66th annual Uptown Whittier Christmas Parade, taking place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 14. The parade, which attracts over 15,000 visitors from Whittier and surrounding communities, will start at Hadley Street and Greenleaf Avenue and end at the Whittier Community Center.

Celebrity Guests Bring Gifts and Holiday Cheer to Lynwood Unified Elementary Students

More than 75 Abbott Elementary School first-graders took slapshots with hockey sticks, performed reading exercises with celebrity guests and received bags of gifts from Santa Claus during the annual Delta Airlines Holiday Event on December 10. The special event was put on by P.S. Arts, which provides students with arts education through programs and community events. Abbott students were joined for the day of fun activities by Delta partners, including Los Angeles Laker Girls, the Los Angeles Kings Ice Crew and members of the local fire department.
