Baldwin Park High School Students Recognized for Excellence in Speech Contest
Baldwin Park’s Organization of Supervisors and Administrators recognized five students for delivering powerful speeches, including Baldwin Park High School senior Kendra Nguyen who placed first and secured a spot at the Association of California School Administrators Region XV Student Oratory Contest. Sierra Vista High School students Hanna Cardenas and Brianda Medina came in second and third places, respectively for their speeches. Sierra Vista High School student May Suyat and North Park Continuation High School senior Ezdra Esparza earned honorable mentions.
West Covina Unified Elementary Student Wins T-Shirt Design Contest
Orangewood Elementary School fourth-grader Paz Toma’s depiction of hands reaching into a circle to join together – one of which features bright primary colors associated with autism awareness – earned the top prize in the District’s annual Autism Awareness T-shirt design contest. Toma’s design, which also features the words “What makes you different is what makes you beautiful,” adorns T-shirts that are available for purchase through the District office.
Lynwood Unified to Complete Playground Renovation Projects
Students from Roosevelt, Will Rogers and Marshall elementary schools are enjoying new playground areas that encourage increased physical fitness and fun thanks to a $774,000 facilities renovation. Abbott, Rosa Parks and Mark Twain elementary schools are nearing completion of their own new playgrounds.
Inglewood Unified Canvasses Neighborhoods for Student Outreach Days
Teams from Inglewood Unified’s District office, schools and volunteers, visited neighborhoods across Inglewood to share information about the district and its schools on March 5 and 6. The teams, including County Administrator Dr. Erika Torres, visited homes, businesses and community organizations to provide details about the district’s educational programs, student success and facility improvements.
Sierra Vista Junior High students spent the morning of Feb. 28 with Andres Chavez, grandson of human rights activist Cesar Chavez, to learn about the legacy and societal impact of the “Sí se puede!” movement. Seventh-graders at the school have spent the year studying Chavez’s work, including the Delano Grape Strike and his 25-day fast.
Whittier Union Senior Wins Full-tuition Posse Scholarship
Santa Fe High School senior Roman Vargas entered middle school without any expectation of ever attending college, but six years of Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes and rigorous academic opportunities taught him to set goals, collaborate with classmates and work toward achieving post-secondary success. Vargas – a first-generation college student with a 4.2 GPA – is on his way toward making his dreams happen after winning a full-tuition Posse Foundation scholarship to attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges, a private liberal arts college in Geneva, New York, where he will major in history.
Fontana Unified Elementary Unveils New STEAM Classroom
SPARK-E, an animatronic robot dressed in a Fontana sports jersey, greeted guests on Feb. 27 as Cypress Elementary School unveiled a classroom dedicated to instruction in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) topics. Students eagerly showcased homemade Piper computers and whirling Ozobot robots they built and programmed for the unveiling, held concurrently with a Family STEAM Night.
West Covina Unified’s Edgewood IB Schools to Hold Shakespeare Festival
The Edgewood International Baccalaureate Schools will hold their annual Shakespeare festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 28, which will include theatrical performances and family-friendly games. Attendees are encouraged to wear Renaissance attire. Edgewood IB Schools are at 1625 W. Durness St., West Covina.
Fontana Unified Elementary to Hold 2019-20 State of the District Event
The Fontana Public Schools Education Foundation will host Fontana Unified’s 2019-20 State of the District breakfast at 8 a.m. Thursday, March 20, providing community members and District partners with insight into the District’s successes and culture of innovation. Superintendent Randal S. Bassett will deliver the keynote address at the event, held at the Center Stage Theater, 8463 Sierra Ave., Fontana.
Baldwin Park Unified to Host Second Annual District Showcase
Baldwin Park Unified’s 20 elementary, middle and high schools will spotlight key programs in academics, athletics and arts, as well as a multitude of student activities and clubs during the second annual District Showcase from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 14 at Morgan Park, 4100 Baldwin Park Blvd., Baldwin Park. The District Showcase will feature interactive booths and displays that highlight a variety of programs, including the Dual Language program, science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics opportunities, and an array of career technical courses.
