Río Hondo College Holds Virtual Undocumented Student Action Week

Río Hondo College’s Student Success and Dream Center celebrated its undocumented community during Virtual Undocumented Student Action Week, held from Oct. 18-22, heralding the 20-year anniversary of the landmark State of California civil rights legislation AB 540, which guaranteed undocumented students pay the same in-person tuition rate for California colleges and universities. The week provided the College’s undocumented community access to information and resources and encouraged them to share their personal journeys. Highlights included a virtual art gallery, panel discussions, and an UndocuFamily Night with a focus on immigration rights and mental health.

Fontana Unified to Hold Parent Meetings for Dual-Language Program

Fontana Unified School District will hold virtual information meetings for its Spanish Dual-Language Immersion (DLI) program on Tuesday, Nov. 16 and Thursday, Nov. 18. The District’s DLI program, which begins in kindergarten and is offered at Redwood Elementary School and Dolores Huerta International Academy, aims to foster bilingualism and biliteracy, sociocultural competency and high levels of academic achievement. El Monte High School to Host Free Flu Shot Clinic

El Monte Union will host a free walk-up and drive-thru flu shot clinic Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at El Monte High School, 3048 Tyler Ave., El Monte. Bonita Unified Offers Drive-Thru COVID-19 Testing to Community

Bonita Unified School District is offering a free drive-thru COVID-19 testing clinic to students, parents, employees, and community members, held 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The next clinic is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 20 at San Dimas High School, 800 W. Covina Blvd., San Dimas. The clinics will run through Saturday, Nov. 27. Appointments are not necessary to receive the PCR test, but every participant must complete a patient test request form.

Whittier Union Adult School Introduces New Plumbing Course, Teaches Workforce Skills

Whittier Union Adult School students are learning the fundamentals of residential plumbing as part of the school’s newly launched plumbing course, which provides students with the opportunity to become apprentices and graduate with work-ready skills. Under the guidance of instructor Giovanni Masia – and with a newly built plumbing model classroom – students are learning the fundamentals of residential plumbing such as measuring, cutting and installation of pipe in accordance with the California Plumbing Code guidelines. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to gain apprenticeships through their local plumbers’ union, enabling them to hone their knowledge and apply their skills while working for local companies.

Hacienda La Puente Unified Schools Earn Top Honors in 2022 Best K-8 Schools Rankings

Hacienda La Puente Unified’s elementary and middle schools have been listed among the top performing public schools in California, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 Best K-8 Schools rankings. Nine Hacienda La Puente schools ranked in the top 20 percent of schools. Los Molinos Elementary School and Wedgeworth Elementary School rank in the top 5 percent and Mesa Robles Middle School earned a spot in the top 4 percent. The inaugural K-8 rankings are based on student proficiency and performance in mathematics and reading.

Senator Gonzalez, Assembly Speaker Rendon to visit Lynwood High School Site to Discuss Needed Improvements

Senator Lena Gonzalez and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon will tour the Lynwood High School Imperial Campus, the site of a building collapse back in June 2020, to experience the impact of the construction failure on the educational community and discuss improvements needed at the site. Lynwood Unified Superintendent Gudiel Crosthwaite will be joined by members of the Board of Education to tour the state leaders around the Imperial Campus, which no longer hosts students as the District explores options for improvement while prioritizing the safety of students and staff.

Río Hondo College Students Celebrate Culture, Create Día de Los Muertos Altar

Río Hondo College students are delivering vibrant expressions of Chicano/a and Latino/x culture through their work on a Día de Los Muertos altar, which is on display at the Self Help Graphics & Art exhibition in Los Angeles, ‘Everything Connected: Land, Body, Cosmos. The exhibition, which runs through Nov. 24, is part of an ongoing partnership between Río Hondo College Arts and Cultural Programs and Self Help Graphics & Art – a community arts center that encourages and promotes Chicano/a and Latino/x artists. Río Hondo students Art Aguilar, Meliza Lopez, Emily Lopez and Esbeidy Nuñez created the altar to acknowledge the meaning of Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead – a celebration associated with the joyful observance of death and life. The altar was created under the direction of master altaristas Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna Esparza Ahrens, and Río Hondo College’s Assistant Professor of Photography Miyo Stevens-Gandara.

Baldwin Park Unified Media Students Showcase School Excellence

Media students in Sierra Vista High School’s video production class, led by teacher Jenna Guerrero, released the new episode of Sierra Vision on Oct. 14 – a student-led video series that showcases Dons pride and excellence throughout the Sierra Vista campus. The newest episode recaps the month of September, including breakout moments in sports, club events and student activities. Watch the video.

Founder of Compton Health Bar Virtually Visits Lynwood Unified School

Compton Health Bar founder Dani Solorio, who has been featured on the CBS show “Destination LA” for bringing organic recipes to her community, paid a virtual visit to Lynwood Unified’s Lugo Elementary School to share a new menu item with parents during a special parent meeting on Oct. 21. Solorio shared the recipe for “Fire Cider,” a natural way to boost the immune system. Solorio graduated from Lynwood High School before becoming renowned for her journey as a Mexican immigrant who created a unique and vital health space in the Compton area that offers free health consultations, custom herbal remedies, homemade superfood formulas and natural dietary supplements.
