Río Hondo College has been recognized by Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine, placing them in the Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics list and highlighting the College’s rigorous academics and sterling degree programs. Using information from the California Department of Education’s database for the 2019-20 school year, the publication awards institutions that are committed to serving Hispanic/Latino students’ needs.
Monrovia Unified School District Board of Education, administrators, students, staff and community will join together at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17 as the District hosts the 2021-22 State of the Schools Address. Highlights will include how the District navigated COVID-19 and school closures; moving from virtual learning to hybrid learning; the return to in-person instruction; how Monrovia Unified has maintained a sound budget; expansion of student support systems; and school programs such as athletics, the arts, early college and more. The night will end with the presentation of the District’s 2021-22 showcase video.
Baldwin Park Unified Football Teams to Face Off in Crosstown Game
Tokay Elementary School will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a schoolwide assembly at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, featuring students performing songs and chants, and former Tokay principals and current student council members sharing stories and history about the school. Tokay Elementary opened its doors on Sept. 7, 1982, becoming the first year-round school in Fontana Unified. The event is free and open to the entire Fontana Unified community. Tokay Elementary is located at 7846 Tokay Ave., Fontana.
Lynwood Unified, St. Anne’s Expand Early Childhood Program
Lynwood Unified School District, in partnership with St. Anne’s Family Services, is expanding its Early Childhood Education program, providing Lynwood families with additional services and learning centers in 2022. Two new center-based infant and toddler programs will open at the beginning of this year at Abbott and Lugo elementary schools, serving children aged 12 to 36 months. There will be 84 spaces available at Abbott Elementary and 80 spaces for young learners at Lugo Elementary.
Fontana Unified CTE Teacher Appears on CBS Show ‘Tough As Nails’
While Fontana High School’s newest career technical education instructor, Lamar Hanger, guides students in developing carpentry skills in the classroom, his own expertise is being showcased across the U.S. on the television show “Tough As Nails” – which premiered Oct. 6 on CBS. Hanger brings versatile experience in construction, welding, metal-stud framing, and lath to the CBS competition series for working-class professionals and to his new position at Fontana High School, where students are receiving a hands-on education that can lead to apprenticeships and career opportunities.
Baldwin Park Unified Athletics Adds Girls Flag Football
Baldwin Park Unified’s Sierra Vista High School added a new competitive sport to the school’s athletics roster with the first competitive girls flag football team. The 15-person team started the season on Sept. 29 in a game against San Juan Hills, and played their second game on Oct. 7 against Beckman High School.
Lynwood Unified Celebrates Successes, Resiliency at State of the District
Lynwood Unified’s Superintendent Dr. Gudiel Crosthwaite, the Board of Education and the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation welcomed community leaders and members to the fourth annual State of the District on Oct. 8. Dr. Crosthwaite recapped the triumphs and trials of the last year, focusing on the accomplishments made possible through the work and dedication of District administrators, teachers, staff, and local partners.
Whittier Union High School District Hosts Weekly Vaccine Clinics
Whittier Union High School District, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, will host weekly vaccine clinics for the community. The clinics will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday until December at the District Board Room, 9401 Painter Ave., Whittier, on the Mulberry Drive side. The next scheduled clinic is Wednesday, Dec. 22. Parent consent is required for students under 18 years of age, and those under 14 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
El Monte Union Unveils 3 Draft Trustee Area Maps, Seeks Public Input
El Monte Union High School District unveiled three initial draft trustee area maps – NDC Green Map, NDC Purple Map and NDC Yellow Map – as it moves forward with shifting from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections. Five school-site community open houses are scheduled for the public to provide input on how the trustee areas are divided. Information will be the same at each session. Fontana Unified to Host COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for Community
Fontana Unified School District has partnered with Walgreens to offer a COVID-19 vaccine clinic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Fontana High School, 9453 Citrus Ave., Fontana. The clinic is open to anyone ages 12 and up who is interested in receiving their first, second or booster does of the Pfizer vaccine. No appointment is necessary.
