Lynwood Unified School District schools have been recognized with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) awards for their outstanding efforts in creating and maintaining a positive campus climate and creating an engaging school environment where students can succeed. Lynwood Unified is the only district in Los Angeles County to receive PBIS awards for each school this year. The awards were presented to principals and students during the Oct. 13 Board of Education meeting.
Gordon H. Beatty Middle School’s Debate Program students are researching current events, practicing their diction and challenging their preconceived ideas to sharpen their skills as they prepare for debate tournament season, which this year returns to the standard in-person format. More than 60 Beatty Middle School students, in grades six to eight, are part of the Debate Program, with 50 students participating in tournaments this year. The team is gearing up for its first Orange County Debate League tournament on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Fall Friendship Scramble, which will be hosted at Buena Park Middle School, 6931 Orangethorpe Ave., Buena Park.
Tokay Elementary School celebrated its 40th anniversary with a schoolwide assembly on Oct. 14, featuring lively songs and chants performed by students, as well as heartfelt speeches and memories shared by former Tokay principals and current student council members. Tokay Elementary opened its doors on Sept. 7, 1982, becoming the first year-round school in Fontana Unified.
Chaparral High School senior Natalie Bolanos, San Dimas High School senior Jaiden Miranda, and Bonita High School senior Grishm Sethi were welcomed by the Bonita Unified Board of Education as the student representatives for the 2022-23 school year. Miranda, Bolanos and Sethi, who were sworn into their positions during the Oct. 12 Board meeting, will attend all regular monthly Board meetings during the school year, provide school reports and advocate for their peers. Each student leader is an active member of various campus activities and has aspirations to attend college.
Hacienda La Puente JROTC Cadet Wins Scholarship for Citizenship
La Puente High School senior and Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadet George Salazar is one of seven students to receive a $4,000 scholarship from the Wounded Warriors Family Support Organization for his outstanding citizenship and patriotism. Salazar was honored during a Microsoft Teams virtual event on Oct. 6, where he was recognized for his leadership, discipline, character and community service efforts within the City of La Puente and the JROTC program over the past four years.
Río Hondo College Presents Virtual UndocuSuccess Panel
In collaboration with San Diego Mesa College, Río Hondo College will host an UndocuSuccess Panel, where graduates and professionals will share their experiences on how to navigate the educational system and share their personal journeys as undocumented individuals, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 21. Río Hondo College Hosts Undocumented Students Presentation
Río Hondo College’s DREAMER’s Resource Center will host a virtual presentation titled “Breaking Barriers: Exploring Our Story” from 1 to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20. The event will provide students, staff and faculty members with the opportunity to network, seek out support and build community relations. Food will be provided. Río Hondo College will host a virtual event titled “Embracing the Undocumented Identity through Advocacy” through a partnership between the College, San Diego Mesa College and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, from noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17. The event will present information on how undocumented students can become advocates for themselves and others in their community. Río Hondo College to Honor New Sup/Pres with Installation Ceremony
Río Hondo College will welcome educational leader Dr. Marilyn Flores as its 11th Superintendent/President with an installation ceremony filled with appetizers and drinks, honored guests and entertainment. The outdoor event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 at the College’s upper quad breezeway of the L Tower. The Board of Trustees will be in attendance for the ceremony, which will feature remarks from Board President Vicky Santana, and Director of Government and Community Relations Dr. Russell Castañeda-Calleros serving as the master of ceremonies.
