Lynwood – Lynwood Unified administered the Oath of Office to newly appointed Board member Julian Del Real-Calleros who was selected during a special meeting on April 8 to review applicants for the open Board seat.

Del Real-Calleros was one of seven applicants who appeared before the District’s Board of Education, and the Lynwood community watching via livestream, and was voted in to replace recently retired Board member Alma-Delia Renteria.

“I’m honored to be given this opportunity to serve this community in a greater capacity,” Del Real-Calleros said. “To the Lynwood community – I’m ready to work hard to advocate for your best interests. I’m looking forward to working alongside my fellow Board members to bring the very best to Lynwood.”

Del Real-Calleros now joins Board President Maria G. Lopez, Vice President Alfonso Morales, Clerk Alma Carina Castro, and Board member Gary Hardie Jr.

Renteria announced her retirement effective after the March 11 Board meeting, opening the door for applicants of the community. The seven applicants selected for the April 8 meeting participated in a public interview prior to the Board vote.

Del Real-Calleros is a former graduate of the District who has served as a substitute teacher in Lynwood Unified and full-time teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. He brings a strong record of community service through his work on the City of Lynwood’s Planning Commission, and mentorship as a Lynwood baseball coach.

“We are excited to welcome Mr. Del Real-Calleros who brings to our Board a youthful passion and commitment to making positive change,” President Lopez said. “We are eager to continue the great work of the District while implementing fresh ideas that inspire our children to success.”

Lynwood Unified is continuing its staggered reopening of elementary schools, which began on March 22 with K-2 students of Helen Keller and Washington, with five additional schools set to open their doors on April 15. The District is also providing local COVID-19 vaccination opportunities to the community at Firebaugh High School through a partnership with St. John’s Well Child and Family Center.

“We have much to look forward to as we collaborate to bring a successful new era to Lynwood Unified,” LUSD Superintendent Gudiel R. Crosthwaite said. “
