FONTANA, CA – Students filled A.B. Miller High School’s gym abuzz with anticipation as administration revealed the school’s new “Rebel” mascot, showcasing A.B. Miller’s commitment to school spirit and inclusivity during a pair of on-campus rallies on Feb. 16.

A.B. Miller’s modern mascot was carefully designed to reflect the school’s “rebellious spirit,” embodying the spirit of resilience and determination the school and its alumni have exemplified since the school first opened in 1991. Staff passed out t-shirts featuring the new mascot during the rallies to students, who posed for photos with the new mascot before heading back to class.

“This new mascot signals the rebirth of Rebel pride,” A.B. Miller Principal Dr. Barbara Kelley said. “During the process of reviewing what defined our school, it became loud and clear that the students of A.B. Miller consider themselves Rebels for change. This was the same feeling they had when opening the school; they wanted to be different than the establishment.”

A.B. Miller’s consideration of a rebranded “Rebel” mascot began in June 2020, following an online petition created by students and staff that called for the selection of a new mascot that would better represent the school and community.

The school discontinued the use of its original “Rebel” image, instead using a large letter “M,” while the school formed a committee of students, alumni, certificated and classified staff, administrators and parents to solicit input from the school community on the rebranding process.

“This is a historic day for the A.B. Miller High School community and the start of a new chapter for the Rebels,” Superintendent Miki R. Inbody said. “The school’s new Rebel mascot provides a renewed sense of identity and unity on campus and represents the collective voice and spirit of our students, who pushed for positive change.”
