Fontana Unified Celebrates Student Achievement and Character at Fourth Annual Black History Month Event
FONTANA, CA – Fontana Unified School District (FUSD) celebrated academic achievement, strong character, art, and cultural pride at its fourth annual Black History Month celebration on Feb. 7, honoring the achievements and contributions of Black students and families across the District.
More than 1,300 Black students in grades 3–12 were recognized for academic success, including high GPAs and excellent attendance. An additional 130 students and parents received Historical Figures Character Awards recognizing their leadership, service, and community engagement.
This year’s celebration expanded its honors to include six award categories named after historically significant African American figures, highlighting values such as commitment, growth, service, and social advocacy.
“This celebration was truly a culmination of our community coming together to support students and families,” FUSD Chief of Staff Michael Garcia said. “It was a great opportunity to recognize achievement, showcase our District, and highlight the incredible talent within our schools.”
The event, co-organized by the District African American Parent Advisory Council, featured performances by dance teams from Kaiser, Jurupa Hills, and Summit high schools, and Wayne Ruble Middle School, as well as a student art gallery showcasing more than four hundred submissions from elementary through high school students.
Centered on the theme “One Hundred Years of Black History Celebrations,” the gallery included paintings, drawings, video submissions, clothing, and more, each piece reflecting the historical significance and lasting impact of Black culture.
“Celebrations like these reflect the District’s commitment to equity and inclusion,” Garcia said. “They allow us to highlight the diversity that strengthens both our schools and our community.”
The day also included a resources and vendor fair with nearly 40 vendors and community partners. Individual school sites were also represented with tables offering games, activities, and arts and crafts opportunities.
“This event honored academic achievement, character, and the rich cultural contributions that make Fontana Unified a vibrant District,” Superintendent Miki R. Inbody said. “Thank you to our students, families, staff, and community partners for making this celebration so meaningful.”
