WHERE: South El Monte High School, 1001 Durfee Ave., South El Monte

WHAT: In keeping with California’s emphasis on zero-emissions technology to support improved air quality and combat climate change, students from the El Monte Union High School District, community members and California Air Resources (CARB) representatives will greet the first of a brand new, all-electric school bus fleet – part of a $9.8 million Clean Mobility in Schools pilot project.

VISUALS: Students in school gear greeting the new bus, a “Green Ribbon Cutting” ceremony; bus tours and “a look under the hood;” green-tech information stations; comments from EMUHSD and CARB leadership, and clean air and environmental justice advocates.

BACKGROUND: EMUHSD has been awarded a $9.8 million grant by CARB to fund a menu of clean mobility measures that promote the use of zero-emission vehicles and clean transportation options for students, parents and staff. The project will transform mobility at school sites by funding the following:
• A fleet of 11 new zero-emission buses
• A pilot Career Technical Education (CTE) curriculum to engage students in clean energy career pathways
• Active transportation plan to encourage students to walk, bike, or carpool
• All-electric maintenance vehicles
• Heavy-duty charging stations and onsite energy storage that ties into the District’s existing solar system so operational demand costs can be reduced long-term
