COVINA, CA – Northview High School senior John Rincon will bring his people-centered mindset and passion for engineering to the University of Southern California this fall, continuing a proud family tradition of academic excellence at Northview High.

As a four-year basketball player and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) student, Rincon has made his mark at Northview both on and off the court. He has played varsity basketball since his sophomore year, building lifelong friendships and leadership skills that he plans to carry with him to college.

“USC has always been a dream school for me,” Rincon said. “My sister is there now, and two of my cousins went there too. I’m excited to continue that tradition and see what’s ahead.”

A first-generation college student, Rincon is preparing to major in civil engineering and looks forward to meeting new people and building friendships at USC. He is also excited to play intramural sports in college, become involved with the Latino community, and cheer on his fellow Trojans in basketball and football from the stands.

Rincon credits Northview’s AVID program for helping prepare him for the transition to college. Through his three years in AVID, Rincon was able to explore career readiness resources, listen to guest speakers, and gain valuable perspective on life after graduation. Rincon also completed eight Advanced Placement courses in his time at Northview.

“Fifteen members of my family have gone to Northview, including my siblings and cousins – we’re starting a legacy,” Rincon said. “We have all benefited from the resources and support in Covina-Valley Unified that have allowed us to blaze our own paths through hard work and dedication.”

As he prepares for this next chapter, Rincon said he is grateful for the mentors, teachers, and coaches who supported him throughout his journey.

“John is an incredible representation of Covina-Valley Unified – determined, compassionate, and driven to succeed,” Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Eminhizer said. “We are incredibly proud of his accomplishments and can’t wait to see the impact he will make at USC and in life.”
