Covina-Valley Unified Schools Named to AP School Honor Roll, Highlighting College Preparedness
COVINA, CA – All three Covina-Valley Unified comprehensive high schools have been named to the 2025 Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll, a distinction that underscores the District’s commitment to providing rigorous academic opportunities that prepare students for success in higher education.
Northview High School earned silver-level recognition, while Covina and South Hills high schools were each named bronze schools based on performance data from the Class of 2025.
“Earning AP Honor Roll Silver recognition for the second consecutive year is a powerful affirmation of Northview’s commitment to expanding access to rigorous, college-level learning,” Northview High Principal Dr. Leo Magallón said. “This recognition reflects intentional systems that prioritize equity and aligns directly with our Gold Standard focus on preparation, opportunity, and outcomes.”
The AP School Honor Roll evaluates schools using three key metrics: college culture, which measures the percentage of graduating students who took at least one AP exam; college credit, reflecting the percentage of graduates who earned a score of three or higher on an AP exam; and college optimization, which recognizes schools where students took five or more AP exams, including at least one exam taken in ninth or tenth grade.
All three Covina-Valley Unified schools scored the highest in college optimization, with Northview and Covina high schools earning gold and South Hills earning silver.
“This honor reflects our mission of Every Student, Every Day, and our belief that all students can succeed when provided meaningful opportunities and strong support systems,” Covina High Principal Dr. Daisy Carrasco said. “It represents a shared culture of high expectations and collective responsibility for student success.”
Beyond AP coursework, each high school offers additional programs designed to deepen academic engagement and better prepare students for the expectations of higher education. At South Hills High, students can also enroll in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme, a globally recognized, rigorous academic framework that fosters critical thinking, research skills, and international-mindedness.
“This honor is a testament to our commitment to academic accessibility and excellence,” South Hills High Principal Terry Abernathy said. “It signals that South Hills is a place where high expectations meet high support, and proves that we are successfully preparing a broad range of students for the rigors of college level work both through the AP and IB programs.”
Covina High students can participate in the Early College Program, which allows them to take college-level courses and earn transferable college credit while still in high school. At Northview High, students can also participate in the AP Capstone Diploma Program, a two-year, research-focused pathway that emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and independent inquiry.
“Each of our high schools offer unique programs and opportunities that encourage students to fully engage in rigorous coursework,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Blackmore said. “We are incredibly proud of our students, teachers, staff, and administrators for their dedication and hard work in earning this recognition.”
