COVINA, CA – Northview High School rising senior Nabhat (JinJin) Sanglimsuwan first became interested in advocating for her peers and elevating student voice after stopping by her school’s library for a free slice of pizza during her freshman year. While there, she stumbled into a meeting of the School Site Council, which inspired her to get involved. At a subsequent meeting, she proposed reducing Advanced Placement exam fees to support economically disadvantaged students, helping make a meaningful change for her peers.

Sanglimsuwan is now amplifying student voice on a national stage, after representing Covina-Valley Unified at the National Community Schools and Family Engagement Conference on May 28. As a member of the Greater Los Angeles Student Catalyst Council, Sanglimsuwan and her nine fellow council members presented on student advocacy and the importance of student voice.

“I was really happy to see all our months-long work come together and how wonderful it turned out,” Sanglimsuwan said. “I’m the only one on the council from the San Gabriel Valley, so I was very honored to represent the students at my school, District, and Valley.”

Sanglimsuwan joined the first-ever cohort of the Greater Los Angeles Student Catalyst Council in summer 2025 after being encouraged and nominated by Northview High principal Leo Magallón. The council is a two-year commitment, extending until summer 2027.

As part of the council, Sanglimsuwan researches the student experience by conducting surveys focused on school culture, community, student perspectives, barriers to engagement, and more. Council members hold monthly meetings, attend conferences, and speak with education professionals about changes that could positively impact students.

“In order to create change, we must first provide a platform for students to actually share their voices, and, second, take those voices and turn them into real-world outcomes,” Sanglimsuwan said. “The drive and hope that I can put student voice into action is what brought me to the council.”

At Northview High, Sanglimsuwan serves as vice chairman of the School Site Council, captain of the varsity swim team, president and co-founder of the Youth Workers Association, and president of the school’s California Scholarship Federation and National Honor Society chapters. She was also the founder and president of Las Palmas Middle School’s Interact Club and later founded Northview High’s chapter, where she now serves as president.

Sanglimsuwan works as a tutor and center assistant at Kumon and continues to give back to her community as a Covina Youth Volunteer and volunteers at the Huntington Library & Gardens.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without my family and friends,” Sanglimsuwan said. “The compassion and support I receive inspire me to go out and give back to others. In the future, I want to do something that gives me a chance to know how a community works and help change it for the better.”

This summer, Sanglimsuwan participated in Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America, a prestigious five-week program at Princeton University and Yale University that allowed her to learn more about leadership, community impact, and potential colleges and careers.

“JinJin is a standout student leader who listens to others and advocates for meaningful change,” Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Blackmore said. “Her commitment to elevating student voice and serving her community makes her an outstanding representative of Covina-Valley Unified. We are excited to see the lasting impact she will continue to make.”
