COVINA, CA – Covina-Valley Unified School District kicked off the 2024-25 school year with colorful balloons, signs, lively rallies, and engaging activities on Aug. 19, welcoming students back for another year of learning, growth, and discovery.

The celebrations set a positive tone for the year ahead, reinforcing the District’s commitment to providing an “Innovative Education that Inspires Every Student’s Unlimited Potential.”

“It was nice helping decorate the campus this morning to bring up the school spirit and get more people excited for the first day back,” Northview High School senior and Associated Student Body president Byron Tovar said. “With this being my senior year, I’m most looking forward to ending my time at Northview on a strong note and getting ready for college.”

On Aug. 13, the District Health and Wellness Center hosted its annual Back to School Extravaganza, bringing together students and families for a day of preparation and celebration. More than 400 students facing financial or housing insecurity received essential supplies for a successful start to the school year, including free backpacks, lunch pails, school supplies, and haircuts. Attendees also had the opportunity to receive complimentary oral, health, and wellness screenings provided by a variety of vendors.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this event possible, especially our generous donors who supported the ‘Stuff the Bus’ fundraiser,” District Mental Health Services Coordinator and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Ana Vasquez said. “Your contributions brought smiles to our students’ faces and helped set them up for another successful school year.”

Covina-Valley Unified welcomed staff, faculty, and administrators back for the new school year with an engaging Welcome Back Convocation on Aug. 15, which included a Health and Wellness Fair, offering valuable resources and support for employees, and a complimentary breakfast. Emmy Award-winning speaker, bestselling author, and professional leadership expert Clint Pulver delivered the keynote address, motivating Covina-Valley Unified educators to embrace another successful year ahead.

“I’m looking forward to meeting a new group of students and really getting to know them, that’s always my favorite part of a new school year,” Traweek Middle School math and science teacher Krista Marriott said.

The 2024-25 school year marks the launch of two new Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways at Covina-Valley Unified. The new Cosmetology pathway at Tri-Community Adult Education Center is open to students from all three of the District’s comprehensive high schools, offering hands-on experience in a dynamic field.

Additionally, Covina High School’s new Aviation pathway aims to ignite students’ passions and expand their career horizons. These programs, along with the District’s other innovative offerings, help to ensure all students are equipped with the skills and tools they need to succeed in school, careers, and beyond.

“As we embark on another school year filled with promise and potential, I am incredibly proud of our students, staff, and community for the enthusiasm and dedication they have shown,” Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Eminhizer said. “Together, we are creating an environment where every student can thrive, explore their passions, and realize their unlimited potential. Let’s make this school year another great one!”
