Covina High Senior Takes Passion for Impact to UPENN, Extending the School’s Ivy League Legacy
COVINA, CA – Covina High School senior Titilola (Lola) Opanubi is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey this fall at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), paved by her deep commitment to academic excellence, social impact, and student leadership.
Opanubi’s acceptance to UPENN continues a tradition of Ivy League success at Covina High School – a legacy of academic excellence that has spanned the past three years.
Driven by a desire to uplift her community, Opanubi has spent her high school years leading and giving back. Through a voluntary Social Impact Project with Close the Gap Foundation, she worked to increase awareness of college access programs, such as “fly-in” opportunities and internships. Opanubi also serves as finance director for IgniteHER, a nonprofit focused on empowering the next generation of young female leaders.
“I’m not always a loud person myself, so being in communities where I’m able to share things I’m passionate about and make a difference is something I really enjoy,” Opanubi said. “I love helping people.”
In summer 2024, Opanubi was selected as one of just 100 students nationwide for the prestigious University of Southern California Bovard Scholar program. During the three-week program, she honed her leadership skills, learned how to refine college applications, and participated in a job-shadowing experience at Morgan Stanley, where she said her passion for finance was solidified.
Opanubi is now preparing to attend the Wharton Business School at UPENN, where she plans to major in finance and economics with the hope of pursuing a career as a financial advisor.
“I am so excited to go to UPENN and see a few of my Bovard Scholar friends who will also be attending,” Opanubi said. “I can’t wait to get involved on campus and to start pursuing my career. Helping people while working with money is the perfect combination for me.”
During her time at Covina High, Opanubi has been a standout student and leader – serving as president of Key Club, co-founder and co-president of the Black Student Union, yearbook design editor, and the secretary of finance for the Associated Student Body. She has also taken numerous advanced placement classes and joined the school’s stunt team in her senior year.
“Lola represents the best of Covina-Valley Unified – she’s intelligent, driven, compassionate, and committed to making a difference,” Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Eminhizer said. “We are so proud of her accomplishments and can’t wait to see the positive impact she will continue to make at UPENN and beyond.”
