Lynwood – Lynwood Unified Board of Education members joined Congresswoman Nanette Barragán and District personnel for a walkthrough of the Lynwood Imperial campus, formerly Lynwood High School, on Feb. 15.

In June 2020, several ceiling panels fell at the Lynwood Imperial campus while the school was closed due to the pandemic. In response to the incident, the District and the Board have been working diligently to investigate and address structural issues at the school.

For the 2021-22 school year, approximately 1,900 Lynwood High School students were relocated to the campus on Bullis Road, formerly Lynwood Middle School, which had to be renovated to accommodate high school students, while the issues at the Imperial campus were under investigation. Multiple structural issues have since been identified on the Imperial campus. The current estimated total cost for the project is $400 million.

The walkthrough with Congresswoman Barragán aimed to raise awareness of the finances required to move forward with the necessary repairs to ensure the campus is a safe learning environment for future students.

“Education is the number one door to opportunity,” Congresswoman Barragán said. “I’m a firm believer that students should come to school and be able to feel safe. It’s a serious issue, and we want to help as much as we can.”

The Board has taken the lead in raising awareness regarding the need for repairs on the campus. With limited funding available from the state for school repairs, Board members have been making efforts to reach out to community leaders and elected officials to receive more support.

“Our primary goal at Lynwood Unified is to ensure all of our students receive an excellent academic experience, and that includes learning in a safe environment,” Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite said. “We are working hard to secure the necessary funding to repair the Imperial campus and return teachers and students to the Lynwood High School they know and love.”
