BUENA PARK, CA – Career Technical Educator Shelley Andros thrives on helping her students find their passions, saying that her profession is more of a calling in keeping with the maxim “Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Her exemplary work ethic at Buena Park Junior High has earned her the title of 2021 Teacher of the Year award from the Orange County Department of Education. The award winners were announced virtually in May.

“I love learning and collaborating with my students and peers and continually seek methods that would best suit the education of our next generation,” Andros said. “It’s an honor to be able to say that I love what I do and I’m proud to have my work recognized.”

Andros was also selected as Teacher of the Year by the Buena Park School District and one of the 2020 Top 10 Educators of Orange County by Parenting OC Magazine.

Andros has taught horticulture, robotics and computer science at Buena Park Junior High since 2017. She also started the school’s Femineers program, advises on the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) sailing program and coordinated the District’s first VEX Robot Nation Tournament.

Andros said her goal for 2020-21 will be to encourage more students to learn about coding, using COVID-19 and the stay-at-home order to show how technology is helping scientists find vaccines, connecting people and guiding ways to feed populations.

“We are all very proud to have Shelley Andros shaping the minds of our students at Buena Park School District,” Superintendent Dr. Ramon Miramontes said. “Her excellence shines brightly at Buena Park Junior High. It’s an honor to have her improving our community with her resourcefulness and endless ideas for boosting academics.”
