SAN DIMAS/LA VERNE – San Dimas High School student-athletes demonstrated their excellence on the field and in the classroom with the release of the CIF Southern Section’s (CIF-SS) 35th annual FORD Academic Awards, in which the Saints earned 23 team academic awards and two individual awards.

Each year, CIF-SS issues team awards in 27 sports; all 23 of San Dimas’ eligible squads were honored this year for maintaining team grade-point averages (GPA) of at least 3.0. San Dimas girls tennis team secured the Academic Award Team Championship among all CIF-SS girls tennis teams from schools with an enrollment below 1,499. The Saints earned the prestigious honor after the team fielded a 3.95 GPA, the highest among its competitors in its sport and enrollment categories.

Every CIF-SS Academic Award Team Champion will be honored in a ceremony before the Los Angeles Angels’ game versus the Oakland Athletics on Monday, April 24 and will receive a banner to commemorate the championship.

“San Dimas has great students who are motivated to be successful in life, and our student-athletes make it a priority to be as competitive in the classroom as they are in any athletic venue,” San Dimas High School Principal Dr. Scott Sparks said. “These awards reinforce the kind of students who attend San Dimas High School, and I am so glad they are getting recognized for their successes athletically and academically.”

Ford Carrey and Melissa Rayas were crowned the San Dimas High 2022-23 Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively. Carey of boys swimming and diving maintained a 4.0 GPA and Rayas of traditional competitive cheer is credited with a 3.9 GPA.

Eight San Dimas squads have posted team GPAs of at least 3.50 so far in 2022-23. Traditional competitive cheer ranked third among fellow CIF-SS squads in its enrollment classification with a 3.50 team GPA. Boys golf (3.75), girls volleyball (3.69), boys tennis (3.60), boys cross country (3.59), girls swimming and diving (3.56), girls water polo (3.53), and boys volleyball (3.50) also posted team GPAs at 3.50 and above.

Boys and girls basketball, soccer, track and field, and wrestling; baseball; girls cross country; football; softball; boys swimming and diving; and boys water polo also earned an Academic Award Team honorable mention.

“Our mission at San Dimas High is to educate, empower, and encourage all students to be caring, contributing citizens who thrive in an evolving world,” San Dimas High Assistant Principal Jack Nance said. “San Dimas provides students a family atmosphere that encourages them to connect to the school, which I truly believe has positively impacted their learning experience. The teachers and staff here show how much they care about the students and it provides the students with the confidence to achieve.”
