BALDWIN PARK – Holland Middle School has been designated as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Schoolwide Site of Distinction for establishing a culture of high achievement and ensuring equity through rigorous academic programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum.

“Being named an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction represents the highest level of AVID implementation, demonstrating excellence in instructional practice and our promotion of college readiness,” Holland Principal Mike Rust said.

Schoolwide Site of Distinction is the highest rating that a school can achieve on the AVID certification rating scale. The award is given to a select few AVID schools for their extensive dedication to providing students with college preparation resources and skills.

Holland, an AVID campus since 2005, offers an AVID class for sixth grade and two classes each for seventh and eighth grades. Eighty percent of Holland teachers are AVID-trained.

AVID principles are used across classrooms, with students receiving academic support through tutoring, college and career guidance, and student tutorials.

“Holland Middle School is an exemplary site that encourages its students to flourish in supportive and innovative environments,” Baldwin Park Unified Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza said. “I want to thank our AVID teachers and staff who have made this program as successful as it is.”
