Baldwin Park Unified Bond Projects Focus on Facility and Safety Upgrades
BALDWIN PARK – Baldwin Park Unified students and employees are benefiting from new air conditioning systems, safer infrastructure and improved safety and security thanks to Measure K, a bond approved by voters in 2006, and Measure AE, a bond approved in 2018.
The most recent project to be completed using funding from Measure K was the renovation of the athletic fields at Olive Middle School. Renovations to the fields began in 2019 and culminated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 20.
During the 2021-22 school year, Baldwin Park Unified also unveiled new scoreboards and upgrades for Baldwin Park High School’s baseball and softball fields.
Other Measure K facilities upgrades included:
• New HVAC system for the Sierra Vista High School gymnasium
• New electrical poles at Baldwin Park High School
• Districtwide elementary school playground safety upgrades to create safer fall zones
• New Cisco phone system
• Lunch shelters and tables at Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools
• Roofing upgrades for buildings at Olive and Sierra Vista middle schools, and Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools
• New marquees at Bursch Elementary, Central Elementary, Sierra Vista Middle School and Baldwin Park High School
Combined with funds from Measure K, BPUSD is using Measure AE to improve campus security, with all schools receiving safety upgrades through the Safe Schools Initiative. This includes the installation of security cameras on all school campuses and the District Administration Center to enhance safety measures.
The District is also working to install a new PA system to further boost school safety. The paging system is a comprehensive emergency response that will deploy mass notifications across all platforms, including mobile devices, computers, office phones and public announcement systems in the case of a fire or other emergency.
The upgrade will entail installing clock speakers on all campuses, and acquiring software to ensure students, staff and parents receive emergency notifications on all devices and platforms.
Construction of a new gymnasium at Baldwin Park High School is underway and is one of the main projects under Measure AE. The school hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on July 13 to mark the beginning of construction on the new gym, which is expected to be completed in fall 2024.
“Both bond measures are making tremendous impacts on our school communities by addressing the necessary improvements to our campuses and ensure our students and staff learn in safe, nurturing academic environments,” Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza said. “Baldwin Park Unified is thankful to community voters for the continued support and dedication to BPUSD students and their success.”
