SAN DIMAS/LA VERNE – Bonita Unified will begin the 2026-27 school year on Monday, Aug. 17 with new principals at Chaparral-Vista High School and Ekstrand Elementary School, bringing a combined 38 years of experience to their new roles.

Kendra Lewis will serve as principal of Chaparral-Vista High School and Kara Duros will lead Ekstrand Elementary School; both appointments were approved by the Board of Education at its Aug. 5 meeting.

Lewis has worked in education for 15 years as a math, coding and AVID teacher and has held leadership roles as a department chair and new teacher mentor. Most recently, she served as the dean of students at Chaparral-Vista High School and was named the Association of California School Administrators’ (ACSA) 2026 Promising Administrator of the Year for Region 15.

Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Claremont McKenna College, a master’s degree in education from Claremont Graduate University and an administrative credential from Azusa Pacific University.

Duros comes to Bonita Unified with 23 years of experience, including eight years in administration. She has served as a teacher, administrator, instructional coordinator, and consultant for school districts across Southern California, serving most recently as an assistant principal at Azusa High School.

Duros earned a bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Cruz and master’s degrees from Lesley University and Reach Institute for School Leadership.

“We are proud to welcome Kendra and Kara into their new leadership roles at Chaparral-Vista and Ekstrand,” Bonita Unified Superintendent Matt Wien said. “Both bring valuable experience and add to a powerhouse team of principals whose passion for student success is central to their stewardship.”
