COVINA, CA – Fairvalley High School has been redesignated as a Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education (CDE), recognizing the school’s standout academic and guidance services that empower students to succeed.

Having maintained Model Continuation status for more than two decades, Fairvalley High is one of only 59 schools in California to receive the designation for 2026.

“The connections we have with students and the intense level of support we offer is what makes our school so special,” Fairvalley High principal Rebecca Handzel said. “If our students don’t feel connected, they won’t come to school and succeed. Our small school setting really fosters that deep connection and underlies all our programs.”

Fairvalley High offers a robust Business Principles Career Technical Education pathway designed specifically to fit students’ schedules. The pathway is made up of two concentrated courses, Entrepreneurship and Business Principles and Practices, allowing students who enroll at Fairvalley for one year the opportunity to complete the pathway.

Students also benefit from dual enrollment opportunities and expanded electives, including arts, drawing, ceramics, and a new leadership class. Students are also encouraged to participate in one of Fairvalley High’s intramural sports, competing in the San Gabriel Sports League.

“Receiving Model Continuation High School redesignation is a true recognition of the excellence and dedicated work we do every day to ensure our students graduate,” Handzel said. “It is incredibly validating to see the outstanding work of our teachers, staff, and administrators recognized.”

Fairvalley High also prioritizes social-emotional support, connecting students with resources through the District’s Health and Wellness Center. An on-campus social worker provides additional counseling and guidance to help students overcome personal challenges and stay on track academically.

Fairvalley High’s redesignation followed an on-site evaluation visit from the CDE on Nov. 18, 2025, during which committee members met with students, teachers, parents, staff, and community partners to learn more about the school’s programs and support systems.

“As a Model Continuation High School, Fairvalley High stands as an example for schools across California on how to empower at-risk youth to persist and succeed,” Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Blackmore said. “Congratulations to the entire Fairvalley High community for this incredible distinction and for your dedication to supporting every student.”
