COVINA, CA – Covina High School junior Gatsbee Gumban, known by his teammates as “The Great Gatsbee,” has been named the Sports Illustrated National High School Boys Athlete of the Week for Aug. 18-24, a recognition that highlights his extraordinary football performance.

In a game against La Puente High School on Aug. 21, Gumban rushed for 337 yards and scored four touchdowns, powering the Colts to a 49-35 victory and earning him the national recognition. Beyond his athletic ability, Gumban is known for his kindness and humility both on and off the field, consistently supporting his teammates, classmates, and school community.

“It feels amazing to receive this recognition, but it was truly a team effort,” Gumban said. “I want to give a huge shoutout to my teammates and coaches for their support, and to my parents who come to every single game and support me 110%.”

Gumban began playing football in eighth grade with the Junior All American team under former UCLA quarterback Osaar Rasshan, who encouraged him to continue pursuing the sport. Since then, he has played all three years on Covina High’s varsity team and has become known for his work ethic, leadership, and dedication.

“My favorite thing about football is the work you have to put in,” Gumban said. “Football is one of the hardest sports to play. It tests you both physically and mentally, and that is what I love most…you have to put in the work and show up every single day to succeed.”

A multi-sport athlete, Gumban has also played for Covina High’s basketball and track teams all three years. Off the field, Gumban balances a full schedule of Advanced Placement courses and has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his time in high school. In his free time, he said he also enjoys photography, reading, and journaling.

“Gatsbee represents the very best of Covina High and Covina-Valley Unified,” Covina High principal Dr. Daisy Carrasco said. “He is not only an outstanding athlete, but also a model student and leader. We are proud to rally behind him and support him in earning this national honor.”

Looking ahead, Gumban said he hopes to earn a Division I football scholarship and ultimately pursue his dream of playing in the National Football League.

“We are so proud of Gatsbee for earning this national recognition and representing Covina-Valley Unified with pride,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Blackmore said. “We know he will continue achieving great things and look forward to cheering him on for the rest of the season.”
