Hacienda La Puente Unified Alternative High School Named 2025 Model Continuation School
CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA – Valley Alternative High School (VAS) has been named a 2025 Model Continuation School by the California Department of Education, a prestigious honor that highlights the school’s unwavering commitment to supporting students in earning their high school diplomas and preparing for their future.
Valley Alternative is one of 74 schools across the state to receive this recognition, reflecting the school’s commitment to meeting students’ needs through flexible class schedules and hands-on learning. Teachers, counselors, and staff work together to provide consistent support and make thoughtful decisions on how to best support each student. Weekly staff meetings are held to review students’ academic performance, behavior, attendance, and overall well-being, fostering a collaborative approach to enhancing the school environment.
“We show up every day for our students because we believe in who they are and who they are becoming,” Principal Joaquin Martinez said. “Whether they are preparing to return to a traditional school, looking into college or a trade, or heading into the workforce, we want them to feel ready and supported.”
At VAS, students receive personalized classes tailored to their learning styles, interests, and experiences. They have the opportunity to explore various subjects and careers through Hacienda La Puente Adult Education programs, including automotive technology, culinary arts, business, welding, health, and cosmetology. These pathways provide hands-on experiences for students to earn elective credits, certifications, and real-world skills they can immediately apply to their careers.
In addition to their academics, VAS also prioritizes students’ social, emotional, and mental well-being. A team consisting of counselors and a psychologist is available to meet with students, provide support, and connect them with any resources they may need to help them stay on track in achieving their goals.
“We are constantly reflecting on our teaching and support practices to make sure we are doing right by our students,” Martinez added. “Building trust with students is at the heart of our work. When they know we care, they are more likely to open up and engage with us, and believe in themselves.”
This marks the sixth time VAS has been honored as a Model Continuation School, underscoring the school’s consistent leadership in alternative education.
“Valley Alternative High School truly represents the heart of our District’s commitment to equity and student success,” Hacienda La Puente Unified Superintendent Dr. Alfonso Jiménez said. “We are proud of the work being done at VAS to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive and earn their diploma.”
