EL MONTE – Excitement filled the air as El Monte High School (EMHS) students ran through the school’s iconic inflatable Lion tunnel to kick off a groundbreaking celebration commemorating the start of construction on the school’s new track and field facility on Oct. 30.

The project will provide EMHS with a modernized track and field facility, made possible by El Monte Union High School District’s (EMUHSD) Measure D and HS funds. Expected to be completed by May 2025, the new athletic space will feature a synthetic track and field, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, and various site improvements, reflecting the District’s commitment to creating versatile spaces that empower students to strive for excellence in both athletics and academic performance.

EMUHSD has designed El Monte High’s new athletic grounds to promote healthy living and school spirit. Once completed, students will enjoy areas for physical fitness, athletic events, wellness instruction, performances, and community gatherings.

“This project symbolizes our District and community’s shared investment in our students’ futures and the strength of our El Monte family,” El Monte High Principal Eddie Cuevas said. “As we break ground today, we’re not just building a new facility—we’re renewing a foundation of pride, tradition, and excellence.”

EMUHSD Board of Trustees members, District and school officials, local dignitaries, and community members attended the groundbreaking celebration, where they enjoyed special performances from the school’s band, cheer team, and color guard. EMHS senior Alexander Gonzalez sang the national anthem a cappella and EMHS Associated Student Body Vice President Hayden Nguyen delivered remarks during the ceremony, which concluded with a celebratory taco dinner.

“Our new track and field will represent so much for El Monte—our home, our community, and our shared memories,” said Nguyen, a junior student-athlete. “While I’ll miss the old track, even with all its muddy days, I am deeply grateful to our Board, superintendent, District staff, and everyone who made this project possible. I’m excited for the opportunities and memories this new track will bring to future generations.”

Approved in October 2018, the El Monte High School Track and Field Project is part of a $190 million modernization effort funded by Measure HS and D bonds, aimed at enhancing District facilities and supporting student success.

“On behalf of our Board of Trustees, we’re thrilled to see this project come to life,” said Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga. “As the first school in our District, we understand the importance of renovation and providing our students with top-notch resources to support their athletic and personal growth. As a proud alumnus and former staff member, it’s exciting to witness our students’ enthusiasm as they embrace this new chapter for El Monte High School.”
