WHAT: The girls flag football teams at Bonita and San Dimas high schools will engage in a beloved District tradition as they face off for the first time during the inaugural season of CIF Southern Section flag football for the “Smudge Crown” rivalry game. With the undefeated Bonita squad setting its sights on a perfect record in its inaugural season, San Dimas will look to play spoiler.

Ashley and Breanna, both in their senior years and co-captains of their teams, attend San Dimas High and Bonita High, respectively.

DETAILS: The Bonita Unified teams compete in opposing leagues – with Bonita in the Palomares League and San Dimas in the Hacienda League – giving the schools another opportunity to compete in a rivalry game and earn bragging rights for the winning team. The Bonita football team recently retained the Smudge Pot trophy, with a win over San Dimas.

“Smudge Crown” is the flag football program’s take on the annual Smudge Pot rivalry, in which the Bonita and San Dimas football teams vie for an iconic silver Smudge Pot, an oil-burning tool used to shield fruit trees from frost and a symbol of the cities’ roots in the region’s citrus industry.
