LYNWOOD, CA. – Lynwood and Firebaugh high school graduating seniors hit a milestone in their academic journeys as they celebrated all the opportunities that await them during annual Decision Day events in April that highlighted students’ achievements and postsecondary plans.

Over 90% of graduating seniors submitted their financial aid FAFSA applications this year, with plans to attend such colleges and universities as UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Cerritos College, University of La Verne and more.

Lynwood High School cheerleaders and staff welcomed students with applause as they walked down a purple carpet to join the April 27 celebration.

Students took to the stage to announce their college and career plans, received a “Knight City” t-shirt and participated in a photo booth, where they posed with props representing the college they plan to attend in fall 2023. Live music, played by radio guests from 93.5 K- Day, filled the room for students to enjoy during the festivities.

“As a senior, I feel great being a part of Decision Day today,” said Lynwood High senior Julie Garay, who plans to major in criminal justice at Cal State Dominguez Hills and pursue a career in law. “It’s exciting getting to see my peers enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity we have all been waiting for.”

Firebaugh High School threw a carnival-themed extravaganza complete with face painting, palm reading, fortune telling, portrait drawing, henna, and airbrush tattoo stands on April 28.
The FHS Cheer ensemble cheered on students as they celebrated their post-high school decisions. Students eagerly queued for the group photo booth, excited to capture memories with their peers, while a lively DJ infused the celebration with an energizing soundtrack.

“It’s always heartwarming to witness full-circle moments such as this,” Firebaugh High School Principal Larry Reed said. “It’s confirmation for both our students and staff that the hard work we put in pays off.”

Both schools served an array of food and treats, while representatives from EduCare Foundation honored students and offered support and guidance.

“Decision Day serves as an exciting opportunity for students to celebrate together and take pride in their accomplishments thus far,” Superintendent Gudiel Crosthwaite, Ph.D. said. “I want to congratulate all of our students for taking this important step in their postsecondary journey and thank our wonderful teachers and staff for empowering students to follow their dreams.”
