SAN DIMAS/LA VERNE – The Bonita Unified Board of Education unanimously approved Matt Wien to serve as the District’s superintendent during its Feb. 1 meeting, a decision met with deafening cheers and a standing ovation from a packed room of District teachers, staff, community leaders and families.

The approval of Wien’s three-year contract for superintendent follows his success as acting and interim superintendent over nearly six months, during which he continued to serve in his previous position as assistant superintendent of educational services.

“During my time here in the District, I’ve been the recipient of encouragement, kindness, and most importantly, grace, from our staff and community,” Wien said as he addressed the Board meeting attendees. “For me, this moment is a testament to the work the entire District has done collectively to make Bonita Unified an incredible place to work, and an incredible place for our students to go to school. As we move forward, I along with the Executive Cabinet will stand with the employees, students and residents of our cities to achieve our highest goals. Thank you to the Board for entrusting me with this position; I will work tirelessly to justify that trust.”

Wien, who has more than 20 years of experience in education, came to Bonita Unified School District in 2010. He spent three years as the assistant principal at Ramona Middle School, followed by four years as the principal of Roynon Elementary School.

Wien was appointed the assistant superintendent of educational services in 2017. As a District administrator, he has focused his efforts on establishing successful academic programs and fostering a collaborative culture that encourages continual improvement for both students and staff.

Under his leadership – both in educational services and as interim superintendent – Bonita Unified developed a comprehensive academic program that has resulted in high levels of achievement on state assessments and placed Bonita Unified in the top 10% of unified districts in California; implemented a Districtwide mental health program that included the hiring of 12 mental health counselors; and earned academic accolades including a National Blue Ribbon School Award and California Distinguished School recognitions.

“Matt has stepped into the superintendent role with ease and provided steady leadership through the first half of the school year, which provided confidence to the Board that he is the right choice to lead Bonita Unified into the future,” Board of Education President Glenn Creiman said. “We look forward to working alongside Matt to continue the great work that has made Bonita Unified one of the best districts in the state.”
