BALDWIN PARK – When COVID-19 forced school closures in March 2020, Baldwin Park Unified’s Nutrition Services team immediately sprang into action, coordinating a meal distribution program that has now served more than 5.5 million meals to the Baldwin Park community.

More than 2.6 million meals have been distributed during the 2020-21 school year alone, with plans to continue distribution throughout the summer.

Nutrition Services Director Rosa Estrella credits the response to hard-working and dedicated employees whose compassion compelled them to answer the call of duty without hesitation. Teaming up with the Los Angeles County Food Bank and local churches, the District has been able to reach families in need throughout the City of Baldwin Park.

“I am ecstatic and extremely grateful to each and every one of my employees for being on the frontlines since day one. This is a special group of people,” Estrella said. “The millions of meals served could not have been made possible without their hard work and compassion for the families that have been affected by the school closures.”

Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista high schools and Jones Junior High School will distribute Seamless Summer meals for children ages one to 18 from Wednesday, June 9 through Wednesday, August 11. The sites will offer weekly bulk meals from 9 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday.

“I am so proud of our exceptional Nutrition Services Department, which has worked tirelessly to provide for the Baldwin Park community,” Superintendent Dr. Froilan N. Mendoza. “Under the direction of Rosa Estrella, the Department immediately adapted to meet the needs of thousands of students and families – providing vital services during school term and through the holiday breaks.”
